A sweet young maiden falls in love with a stalwart farm hand. Her miserly father opposes the match, of course, but deceit and trickery save the day. The story is told in sprightly poetry format that shows off Riley's skill with dialect. Because of the dialect, the story is difficult to read - UNLESS you read it aloud, as it was meant to be. Then the story jumps off the page with energy and fun. My edition is illustrated by John Wolcott Adams. The delicate pen and ink drawings are so typical of the era. Some are in color. I love them. In addition, the cover portrait of the heroine is by Howard Chandler Christy - the preeminent illustrator of the day. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
