"They say," said the girl, "that people disappear up there. And I heard that the lady doesna' ever grow any older."
"The lady?" William asked.
"Lady MacAlasdair. She lives in the castle, and she's been there years, but she stays young and beautiful forever."

In the Scottish Highlands, legend is as powerful as the sword-and nowhere is that more true than in the remote village of Loch Aranoch. Its mysterious ruler, Judith MacAlasdair, is fiercely protective of her land-and her secrets. If anyone were to find out what she really was, she and her entire clan would be hunted down as monsters.

William Arundell is on the trail of a killer. Special agent for an arcane branch of the English government, his latest assignment has led him to a remote Highland castle and the undeniably magnetic lady who rules there. Yet as lies begin to unravel and a dark threat gathers, William finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into the mystery of the Highlands...and the woman he can neither trust nor deny.

He prays she isn't the murderer; he never dreamed she was a dragon.

Set in a fantasy Victorian world where magic is real. William works for a secret agency dealing with magical problems. Judith is a dragon who can take human form. William comes to her village to investigate a murder. Soon the two become romantically involved and work together to uncover the evil that has come to the area. It is the third in a series, so there are points where I feel like I am missing information because i haven't read the prior books. I would be interested in going back to read the first two books. This book took a little longer to get into than the others because the overarching mystery was hard to follow and also kind of obvious. I love Judith and William as a couple, though. ( )

The hero has travelled deep into the Scottish highlands in search of the occult who have begun to sacrifice humans-taking their eyes and other body parts- to summon and control demons. There he meets the stoic and marvellously preserved 40 year old Lady of the manor. She looks no older than 25 years old and villagers speak of strange happenings in the keep. Naturally he suspects her of being the culprit behind the murders but never does he suspect the truth. The heroine is actually a dragon shifter. When a stranger- a Londoner comes to the small village asking questions she naturally suspects him of killing the local animals-or at least knowing who's doing it. It was a stretch to give this book a 3 star but because I enjoy this author's work and because I never hated nor love the story I felt like being generous. The problem with this book from start to finish was a; a boring lifeless plot and b-most import-little chemistry between the characters. I honesty don't believe in the idea that they very grew to LOVE each other. This was 90% murder mystery and 10% romance. The characters begun the story as strongly distrusting one another but being cordial and polite. Then it steadily progressed into a partnership -peppered in with brief sexual encounters-before finally-the just sort of love each other at the end I guess. Where as in my previous red Christine Feehans Safe Harbor the hero was over the top obnoxious with passion, this hero in Night of the highland dragon was dull and beige. I kept waiting for something to spark in either of them as I never quite qot that unfortunately. But as I said- I was never truly 'bored' per say- it had a smooth flow and I liked the characters as a whole but it was pretty monotone. ( )

Dragons with a difference!

William Arundel (a special agent from D Branch which I gather deals with the arcane, exotic and X files of the English Government of the times) is off in the Scottish Highlands tracking down unexplained human and animal deaths, encountering demons and a certain mysterious Judith MacAlasdair Lady of Loch Aranoch. An area that everyone agrees is remote, with tight lipped villages and not much in the way of communication.
Arundel finds that the inhabitants don't gossip much about the Lady. A lady he finds attractive and compelling. But when animals are killed and parts of their bodies taken in ritualistic ways he knows that the village hides secrets. The only question is will Lady MacAlasdair help or hinder him? Or even more significantly is she part of the problem?
I quite enjoyed this and having read neither of the previous novels in the series I am sure that I am going to make up for that deficit in the very near future.

A quick and easy historical fantasy read with a murder mystery plot. The novel has a strong and independent female MC and a male MC who doesn't mind letting the lady lead from time to time. She's a Scottish dragon; he is an English government agent. It's fun, sexy, and dangerous. This is the third book in a series, but can be read as a stand-alone. I do suggest reading the first two novels (focusing on her brothers), but this one is definitely my favorite so far. I really enjoyed the characters, their romance, and the village setting. The mystery part could be developed a little more, but overall, a good choice for historical romance fans who appreciate some fantasy mixed into the story.
