Fiction. Literature. Romance. HTML:From the New York Times bestselling author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo; now with a bonus conversation with Julia Whelan and Taylor Jenkins Reid, recorded exclusively for this edition.
At the age of twenty-nine, Hannah Martin still has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has lived in six different cities and held countless meaningless jobs since graduating college. On the heels of leaving yet another city, Hannah moves back to her hometown of Los Angeles and takes up residence in her best friend Gabby's guestroom. Shortly after getting back to town, Hannah goes out to a bar one night with Gabby and meets up with her high school boyfriend, Ethan.

Just after midnight, Gabby asks Hannah if she's ready to go. A moment later, Ethan offers to give her a ride later if she wants to stay. Hannah hesitates. What happens if she leaves with Gabby? What happens if she leaves with Ethan?

In concurrent storylines, Hannah lives out the effects of each decision. Quickly, these parallel universes develop into radically different stories with large-scale consequences for Hannah, as well as the people around her. As the two alternate realities run their course, Maybe in Another Life raises questions about fate and true love: Is anything meant to be? How much in our life is determined by chance? And perhaps, most compellingly: Is there such a thing as a soul mate?

Hannah believes there is. And, in both worlds, she believes she's found him.

The novelty of this book was great definitely a well crafted "flip flop" book! ( )

“Relationships aren’t neat and clean, they’re ugly and messy and they make almost no sense except to the two people in them. That’s what I think, I think if you truly love someone, you will except the circumstances, you don’t hide behind them.”

This book shows what happens to a woman in her life. She was involved in a major car accident in one life and in the other the car accident never happened. It shows her life decisions made in each that would happen to her and who she would end up with loving forever.

My takeaways: The writing in this book confused me, I had to constantly think which life she was in as the chapter transitions were awful. The main characters were the same in each life so it just added to the confusion. Yes, it ended up being a happy ending read in both of her lives and she declared that she wouldn’t be any happier if destiny changed anything. I resonated really well with the above quote also! ( )

I think my expectations were too high after DAISY was the most perfect book ever.

This was a lot better than I thought it'd be 20% in though. I didn't read the description so when I realised what was going to happen, I rolled my eyes and almost dropped it--I'm so done with the gimmicks. But this surprisingly worked; both storylines were enjoyable. I just don't think they were quite enough--unlike AFTERWORLDS where each story could stand on its own, without the other, they would have been kind of boring. ( )

I love 'sliding door' alternate timeline stories. That aspect of this novel was done really well with Hannah's life taking two different and interesting paths. I enjoyed the voice of the main character and loved the friendship between Hannah and Gabby. This was the highlight of the book for me. I smiled at all the points I was meant to. I had tears in my eyes at appropriate times. I did an internal 'awww' when aww worthy moments occurred. However, I did think the book was a bit preachy about fate and destiny at times. I like to think about things myself and not have an author point out their messages so overtly. Not my favourite TJR outing but still entertaining. ( )
