Ethan Ellenberg Literary Agency, 2019. Dennis Taylor is best known for his Bobiverse series of snaky posthuman novels. His earlier novel, Outland, sticks closer to home. A team of college students from Nebraska develops a gadget to create a portal to an alternate Earth in which human beings never settled the American continent. They are just beginning to test it when the Yellowstone lava dome erupts on a scale that will end civilization as we know it. Can enough refugees be transferred to the pristine Nebraska to allow the species to survive? 3.5 stars. Overall, this was a fun novel. One that you can't look at too closely, mind you, because if you do, I think the entire plot would come crashing down from the weight of logic, physics, and the shocking amount of energy they aren't using. The other thing that helps is the Ray Porter narration. Porter is hands down my favourite audio book narrator. I will say he's absolutely never better than when he's doing Jonathan Maberry's Joe Ledger books, but the man absolutely elevates anything he puts his voice to. As for the story itself, like I said, lots of fun, which is a typical Dennis E. Taylor staple, and the reason I keep coming back to him. I don't know if anything will ever touch his Bobiverse novels, and that's likely the reason he's returning to them shortly, but if you want an end-of-the-world novel, with parallel universes to bop around in, you could do lot worse than this one. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

When the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, it's up to six college students and their experimental physics project to prevent the end of civilization. When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet. The team has just hours to get as many people as possible across to Outland before a lethal cloud of ash overwhelms them. Nothing has prepared the refugees for what they find - a world of few resources and unprecedented dangers. Somehow, they must learn to survive, because Outland may not just be a safe haven - it could be their new home. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |

It took me a while to engage with the characters and some of the sub-plotting felt relatively week.
That being said, the book picked up pace in the latter half and I enjoyed it overall ... I will follow up with the sequels.
As ever, Ray Porter's narration is flawless. ( )
