I think kids will be fascinated with the format of this picture book. It's an accordion or concertina fold book, so all the pages are attached. As a result, you can read the book more traditionally, page by page, or you can read it as one long extending page. The illustrations are basically one continuous illustration running from one page onto the next.

The art style is really loose and colorful and evokes a circus, especially on the page that likens the two musicians to jugglers. It's perfectly on theme for the song that Bird & Diz are playing in the book.

This would be fun for a storytime read-aloud if you had a stand, easel, or table you could prop the book on as the pages unfold. (Or you could recruit a helper.) Because the pages can be unfolded to show half the book at one time, it's a book that provides opportunity for more kids to gather round and all stare at the pictures at the same time. ( )

The musical work and contributions of Charlie “Bird” Parker and John “Dizzy” Gillespie bebop to life throughout this rhythmic picture book. The foldout illustrations mimic the back-and forth collaborations of this duo that prompted a revolution in jazz. Illustrations fold out, Afterword.

This layout of this book is probably the coolest ever. The illustrations in this book are beyond amazing! I think all ages will enjoy Bird & Diz just because of the art within the book. This book tells the story of two musicians whose music notes to tick for tack and end up sounding all that. ( )

This story is about two musicians “Bird” and “Dizzy” who create a new form of jazz known as bebop. I thought this book was very cool, not only because of the illustrations, but it is two sided and continues the story of the two friends in a unique way. I believe this book does a great job of describing the bebop genre to kids. Bebop music has a fast pace and unexpected style and the mood of this book exhibits that well. The colors fly all over the page and the different patterns keep you guessing on each page. I really enjoyed this read and think it would be great for any young readers interested in music, or jazz specifically. ( )

At first glance the unique illustrations immediately peaked my interest. The slightly abstract art seems to be made with charcoal and pastel chalk. There are vibrant colors of pink, orange, green, and blue peppered throughout the book. One very unique aspect to this book is that it is an accordion style book. The story is about two historically relevant musicians who created a type of music called bebop. There isn't much content to the book, ranging from a few words to two sentences per page. The author relies heavily on the images which gives the story depth. On the back page there are a few paragraphs explaining a little more about Bird and Diz and how their music impacted musical culture today. I would recommend this book to any child because it is easy reading, visually stimulating, and pleasantly quirky. However, for someone looking for a fact- filled biography I'd suggest looking elsewhere. ( )
