The writing is very simple for an emerging reader to understand. There are few lines to each page with mostly pictures taking up the majority of the space. For example, over the first two pages, the text states “Bunny wanted to play in the snow all day. But she had to go to school,” (p.1) “Bunny made footprints in the snow. First she made a straight line. Then she made a squiggle,” (p.2). This short and concise text is accompanied by a two-page illustration of Bunny walking in the snow. The sentences are very short and predictable. For example, “First she made…, “ and, “Then she made…” and repeat the main character’s name. Students can use the image to retrieve context clues if they are having difficulty with the text. Not only do the illustrations help with context clues, but also they depict familiar scenes that students can picture themselves in. For example, on pages 13 and 14 there is a picture of all of the characters in gym class singing “Farmer in the Dell”, jumping rope, and playing with one another. All students can relate to being in gym class, so this picture would be very engaging to them. Additionally, the text on that page states, “Brenda was whispering in Cynthia’s ear. And she was looking at Bunny. Bunny wondered why. Her feet got tangled in the rope. Cynthia and Brenda giggled.” For anyone who has been made fun of before, this scene in particular would draw readers in since they would be able to empathize with the characters. The only problem that I have with this book is that all of the sentences are very short and choppy. Some of them even start with “and”. This is not a good representation of quality writing; however, it does aid students in decoding words for emerging readers. The main idea of this story is that you should never bully or exclude anyone from your friend group, and that being nice to everyone is important. ( ) Bunny loves the snow and she loves her best friend Cynthia. One day though, Cynthia decides she wants a new best friend and R.A.T (the mean boy) harasses her with snowballs. When Cynthia and Bunny are faced with a snowball fight they have to decide if their friendship matters! A great book for a new reader. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
