I liked this crudely penned novel more than I should, and found it to be a very satisfying angry superman SF story, perhaps even seminal in that regard. Suffice to say, the central protagonist Dalroi, is really, really angry. He goes on a one man war against a colossal corporation that peddles the prurient pleasures in a massive structure called Failway, which constructs fantasy worlds by refashioning transfinite space. As the novel unfolds there are greater forces at work behind the conflict. The novel does have many motifs and images lifted from "The Stars My Destination" which it is often compared to, but Transfinite Man lacks the satiric panorama of that novel, which is that novel's greatest strength. Conversely, Dalroi is actually a more convincing animus of superhuman fury than Gully Foyle.
I can think of a lot of novels this reminds me of in parts just as much as TSMD: Kuttner/Moore's "Fury", Laumer's "The Infinite Cage", or "Knight of Delusion", Dickson's "Sleepwalker's World", Spinrad's "Agents of Chaos", but in the final analysis, the main general influence on the novel is Van Vogt, and the ending of the novel is a pure giddying blast of Vogtian wildly imagined insanity. So that guarantees I'll be reading more Capp real soon.
As a final caveat I should add -Capp's characterizations are often cardboard flat, and his dialogue is atrocious, so be advised if these things are the most important things to you in reading fiction. ( )
