In 1967, the Vietnam War was escalating quickly, with increased hostility and ever-increasing numbers of US soldiers, sailors and airmen being sent in to stem the tide of Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army regulars into The Republic of Vietnam. There’s nothing really earth-shaking about this book; no great moral lessons to be learned; no high drama and no ‘blood ‘n guts’. Instead, it is simply a true account from one of the many ‘non-combatants’ who found themselves where they did not want to be and doing what they did not want to do.

First, to every military-type person that set foot in Vietnam, or for that matter, was offshore or in the air during this intervention.
Secondly, to my Mom and Dad, who put up with all my bullshit and even saved my letters instead of burning them! I just wish I could have started writing this book sooner so maybe they could have read some while they were still here.

It was a hot and sultry day in Vietnam and yes, I am almost ashamed to start a book this way, but damn it, it was a hot and sultry day when we arrived at Tan Son Nhut Air Base on the morning of July 4th, 1967.

Gosh, I don’t really know! I guess it must have been a freak short caused by a rat munching on some wires or something. I’ve seen some mighty big rats in here late at night!
