Set in Appalachia, this book tells the story of a family’s legacy of violence, drugs, guns, and intimidation. Panowich is a talented writer. This story doesn’t just build suspense for the end, he eloquently drops revelations and connections throughout the story. (My jaw dropped several times.) There’s moments of cruelty and gritty humor…moments of levity are needed when absorbing oneself into the lives of these characters. Fans of David Joy will love this. Wow, this book was pretty dark. Most of the family living on Bull Mountain should feel the wrath of God, but of course, that's not going to happen. Or maybe it did. It was amazing how heartless an cruel some of these people were. It seemed like most of the people in the book didn't care much about life, at least not other people's lives. Somehow, one guy out of the main family turned out good, but of course, he got very little respect. About the only thing I can think of to say about them that's good is that they live where you won't normally ever see them, and if you leave them alone, they probably won't bother you. Kind of like a nest of wasps. It was so bad, I immediately started reading the second book of the series! Bull Mountain is another interesting discovery for me thanks to the great review by goodreads author and reviewer James Thane. Set in the mountains of North Georgia, it is a dark, violent, and entertaining saga of revenge spanning several decades and generations. With strong characters, sharp dialogues and intense action, this book demands to be read in a single sitting. The nonlinear narrative jumping about in time and character perspectives is a bit jarring, but works well in keeping the reader hooked. The descriptions of the mountain and the violence are vivid, making the reading experience visceral. The ending feels a bit too neat, but that is just a minor complaint against this explosive thriller. I enjoyed it a lot and look forward to seeing more of the Burroughs in the next novels of the series. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

The Godfather meets Daniel Woodrell in this Southern debut, a multigenerational saga of crime, family, and vengeance. Clayton Burroughs comes from a long line of outlaws. For generations, the Burroughs clan has made their home on Bull Mountain in North Georgia, running shine, pot, and meth over six state lines, virtually untouched by the rule of law. To distance himself from his family's criminal empire, Clayton took the job of sheriff in a neighboring community to keep what peace he can. But when a federal agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms shows up at Clayton's office with a plan to shut down the mountain, his hidden agenda will pit brother against brother, test loyalties, and could lead Clayton down a path to self-destruction.
