Fantasy. Young Adult Fiction. HTML:

Paint a mural. Start a battle. Change the world. Sierra Santiago planned an easy summer of making art and hanging out with her friends. But then a corpse crashes the first party of the season. Her stroke-ridden grandfather starts apologizing over and over. And when the murals in her neighborhood begin to weep real tears...Well, something more sinister than the usual Brooklyn ruckus is going on. With the help of a fellow artist named Robbie, Sierra discovers shadowshaping, a thrilling magic that infuses ancestral spirits into paintings, music, and stories. But someone is killing the shadowshapers one by one—and the killer believes Sierra is hiding their greatest secret. Now she must unravel her family's past, take down the killer in the present, and save the future of shadowshaping for generations to come. Full of a joyful, defiant spirit and writing as luscious as a Brooklyn summer night, Shadowshaper introduces a heroine and magic unlike anything else in fantasy fiction, and marks the YA debut of a bold new voice.

Let's redefine "urban fantasy" to mean "fantasy novel brimming with uniquely urban communities, the immigrant experience, and people who struggle with urban violence, racism, gentification, homophobia, and police brutality." (Angsty white vampires need not apply.) Shadowshaper feels profoundly like New York, and the city verges on being its own character. ( )

I'm always excited to encounter urban fantasy, especially in young adult where it's not too common (unless you're counting paranormal romance, but fantasy that follows adult UF conventions is a little different). Older's SHADOWSHAPER presents its own mythology in modern New York City. Instead of vampires and werewolves, Sierra's New York is filled with reanimated corpses and paint and chalk murals brought to life by ancestral spirits. Also fairly uncommon is urban fantasy that centers brown-skinned characters, and Older gives us a diverse and exciting story of heritage, art, and some creepy monsters. The writing is lean but expressive and easy to sink into.

Sierra and her teenage friends are a trip; that's the only way I describe them! They're hilarious and Older's dialogue is witty and fun. I listened to the audio book for this, and Anika Noni Rose's narration is superb. She really brings the story to life. This book, whether the audio or written version, belongs in every fantasy-lover's library. ( )

I cant explain how much I adored this book.

My first reaction was to shake the book vigorously at a friend and exclaim "This is the greatest book I ever read!"

That's possibly a teensy bit hyperbolic, but it should tell you how much joy it brought me.

If I could I would take this book and give it to myself at a younger age. I need Sierra to make up part of my childhood world.

Older writes for his audience without condescending or over-simplifying, a skill lacking in so many other YA writers. His world-building is so natural, nothing feels forced and no one is left without dimension. There's a lot of humanity and humor, and the thoughtfulness I expect of DJ.

Friends with kids: if you invite me for a birthday or holiday, this is the gift you're getting. If your kid is too young to read it, you're getting a copy anyway. Read it to them, or to each other. ( )

I liked the Hispanic background to this YA story & the feisty main character Sierra. ( )
