MISTLETOE AND MURDER When Dr. Bree Mathison's plane plummets into the Alaskan wilderness at Christmastime, she is torn between grief and panic. With the pilot--her dear friend--dead and wolves circling, she struggles to survive. Search and Rescue leader David Stone fights his way through the elements to save her. David suspects the plane crash might not have been an accident, spurring Bree's sense that she's being watched. But why is someone after her? Suddenly Bree finds herself caught in the middle of a whirlwind of secrets during the holiday season. With everyone she cares about most in peril, Bree and her promised protector must battle the Alaskan tundra and vengeful criminals to make it to the New Year. We have a female Alaskan doctor named Bree who doesn't seem to do much medically in this book except patch up people who've had emergencies in the outdoors. Bree is left alone after her long-time family friend Jeremiah passes away. She discovers he is not all that she thought he was. Bree also has a past boyfriend who is mentioned around page 100 (for the first time) and then never mentioned again--he has a part in why Bree is hesitant to believe she's in love with Dave.
Jeremiah's cat Ringo is interesting. I do notice though that in many of these types of romance books, there's an animal that is usually hesitant around strangers who has a love-at-first-sight experience when the main love interest shows up.
Dave is ex-military now working search and rescue. He blames himself for not seeing that his wife was lying to him, resulting in him being on a military deployment when she overdosed on pills. Dave's daughter blames him for her mother's death, leading to an estrangement between the two. At least the mention of this is more consistent throughout the book, and I was glad to see the two working toward patching up their relationship by the end of the book.
Bree seems to feel that seeing someone under conditions of extreme stress, such as running for your life, shows their true character. I'm not so sure of that myself. (Though in this fictional case, it was true.) ( )
