The author of this guide to what is "cool" in the Windy City contacted me with a request to use a few photos of John Ronan's Poetry Foundation. Her email explained some of what would be going in the book, which ranges from old and new architecture, to public art, restaurants, bars, landscapes, shops, and other spots worth visiting by residents and tourists. One of them, Hot Doug's, was a popular, if out of the way, spot for "encased meats," that happened to be closing right about the time the book would be going to press. Such is the situation with any guidebooks, which takes snapshot of a time in the constant state of flux that are cities. It's too bad Hot Doug's is gone – Maguire mentions its closing in her introduction – but there are enough cool places left in the city, and in this book, to keep people busy. For me, it's like taking a trip back in time to when I lived in Chicago, while also seeing some of the new places that are supplanting or adding to the old ones. Aimed at the casual acquaintance of Chicago, this book is the first in a new city-specific series from the publishers behind the My Cool series (My Cool Caravan, My Cool Shed), using the same blend of high-end photography coupled with stylish design. Written by a Chicago guide, it features a diverse range of locations from visitor hotspots and street art to some favorite local destinations. Featured locations include Cloud Gate, Aragon Ballroom, Second City, Poetry Foundation, Hot Doug's, Music Box Theatre, Pilsen murals, 57th Street Bookstore, DuSable Museum of African American History, The Original Rainbow Cone, Signature Room at the 95th, and many more.
