"Mila's Tale" is midrash--the retelling of a Biblical passage. Half of it is a new Laurie King short story; the other half is the author's commentary on the text ("Jephthah's Daughter" of Judges 11) and her suggestions for further reading. This is the first in Laurie King's proposed Ladies of Spirit project, a collection of Modern Midrashes accompanied by her analysis and reflections Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |

Mila’s Tale is a contemporary short story that Laurie King calls a ‘modern midrash’. It is a contemporary, feminist, retelling of an old testament story; specifically the story of Jephthah’s daughter, Judges 11:31. King’s story is about an intelligent, young girl in an unnamed, war-torn, third world country. It’s a very good story. I was captivated, even knowing the source of the story and having a foretaste of the ending.
It’s a very short story. Amazon says this kindle offering is 28 pages long. About half of this is the short story. The other half includes King’s translation of the bible passage her short exegesis and commentary on her thoughts about bringing the story into a modern setting. She plans to follow up this first story with a series of modern midrash.
I plan to read them. ( )
