Summary: This book follows a story of the Berlin Wall and how it separates a family. In the end, the family gets reunited and it is a beautiful ending.
Reflection: I love how this book speaks about reunification and how many people go through the separation many families go through because of a wall or because of certain circumstances. This book is a good piece of literature to have in your classroom. ( )

Wall tells the story of separation of families by the Berlin Wall. This book carries an important message that can help us understand and become aware of border separation. Growing up by the border makes this sound all too familiar and I would definitely use this book in my classroom. It can be tough to introduce this topic to children as it is sad, but it is real and is a major part in modern day society.

A young boy and his mother and sister were separated from their father when the Berlin Wall was built between East and West Germany. This story shows the family’s struggle as they try to cross the wall so they can be together again. This spectacular book is based on true stories about the Berlin Wall. Powerful illustrations teamed with an emotive story line make this an impressive tale of triumph over adversity.

The main focus of the book written by Tom Clohosy Cole centers a young boy that encounters a historic part of modern history, the Berlin Wall. This wall was built to separate the ´New Germany' versus the 'Old Germany'. As history has told us the WW II in 1945, Germany decided to built this Wall to separate themselves because of the believes and systems that the country had, but nevertheless that implied a lot more, including the breakings and separation of a thousand of families. Cole describes in his story, a family that was broken because of this event. The boy narrates that his father was stuck when the wall was building, separating him from his wife and children. That made the boy miss him, and dream about his father coming back. He knew the risks of escaping, and that the results could end with escape or death. With hope on his side, he dig a tunnel and when it was ready the family departed. The hard part was not to been seen, but when someone noticed them escaping, he told his story about looking for his dad, and the soldier let them go. At the end, the reunited happily. The story is sad but with a good ending, the kids could understand a dark time in the world with this story, and that problems can be solved with kindness, respect and empathy, like the soldier that let the family pass and continue to look for the father. This book is about a family that has been separated by a wall in Germany. This story would be very good to have in a text set especially here near the border because it is a very relatable topic. I really liked the illuistrations in the book, they add a strong visual effect to the storyline. ( )
