Old friendships -- and love -- make all things new again. Bay McCabe relishes life's simple pleasures, her children, her home by the sea. She has never forgotten the values of her Irish granny -- the everyday happiness of family, good friends, and hard work. Bay and her husband, Sean, have weathered rough spells and moved on. Now a perfect summer, filled with the scent of beach roses, lies before them. Charming and ambitious, Sean splits his energy between the town bank, his old fishing boat, and the family he seems to adore -- until he leaves his young daughter stranded after school. As troubling memories resurface, a phone call confirms that Sean is missing. So begins a season that will change everything. As the door to all Bay cherishes seems to close forever, another opens, and an old love steps through. Embraced by enduring friendships, Bay will discover the truth of who she is -- what love is -- and how life's deepest mysteries are often those closest to home.… (plus d'informations)

I found this book slow to start and it took me a few chapters to get into the storyline and to care about the characters. I liked the strong friendship between Tara and Bay and how willing Tara was to protect Bay and help her. I also liked how they tried to mentor a friendship between Annie and Eliza to become as strong a friendship as their own had been.

I didn't like that Bay's husband had affairs or that the author had the children learn of the affairs. I also didn't like that Eliza had so many issues (cutting, eating disorders, etc.) and that at the end, there's a scene between Bay and Eliza's dad that goes a bit too far and isn't really necessary to tie up the story. Bay McCabe had always kept the advice of her Irish granny close to heart. The closeness of family, friends and the joy of hard work. Bay and her husband Sean had weathered storms, but had finally come to their beach house to work together on their problems.

Sean is charming and ambitious, splitting his time between the town bank, his fishing boat and the family he seems to adore - until he forgets to pick up his daughter from school. As troubling old memories resurface, a phone call confirms that Sean is missing. So begins a season which will change everything.

As a door closes to all Bay cherishes, another opens and an old love steps through. Now, Bay will discover who she is and what love is, embraced by strong friendships that will teach her that the most enduring mysteries are the ones close to home. I give this story a B+! - it was charming in parts. ( )

Quite an expose of marriage, loyalty, and betrayal within two families, at least. Some real villains, too. ( )

Bay McCabe, over 40 mother of 3, feels her life is stalled, but that’s nothing compared to the havoc she wrestles through when her husband is accused of embezzling funds and is then found murdered. Bay must hold everything together for her children despite her own anger and hurt, and shes does so with the help of her lifelong best friend, an old flame, and her new employer.

Dan Connolly thought he’d somehow failed his wife and daughter, until the investigation uncovers the truth--his wife was cheating on him with Bay’s husband. But it’s even worse to learn that his daughter, traumatized by her own mother’s death a year before, is now the target of the murderous bank embezzlers.

Good crime mystery, wonderful coastal CT locale, rich characters. A little too much description and backstory, but Rice milks the emotions from this book. ( )
