Not Ms. Kelly's best. Captain Spark's behavior (bad) when we first meet him is inconsistent with how he acts later (good). And almost everything that happened after they landed on the Azores Islands required too much suspension of disbelief to enjoy. ( )

This is one of my favorite Carla Kelly books. Hannah is feisty and fearless, despite the fact that she is on board the vessel of a very arrogant, strict Captain Sir Daniel Spark. Sparks do fly and the voyage has the grittiness of the war, the harshness of the British Navy, and the inevitable "love conquers all" ending. I love it! ( )
