"When Stephanie moves to the notoriously cheap Perry Bar neighborhood of Birmingham, she's just happy to find an affordable room for rent that's large enough not to deserve her previous room's nickname, "the cell." The eccentric -- albeit slightly overly-friendly -- landlord seems nice and welcoming enough, the ceilings are high, and all of the other tenants are also girls. Things aren't great, but they're stable. Or at least that's what she tells herself when she impulsively hands over enough money to cover the first month's rent and decides to give it a go. But soon after she becomes uneasy about her rash decision. She hears things in the night. Feels them. Things...or people...who aren't there in the light. Who couldn't be there, because after-all, her door is locked every night, and the key is still in place in the morning. Concern soon turns to terror when the voices she hears and presence she feels each night become hostile. It's clear that something very bad has happened in this house. And something even worse is happening now. Stephanie has to find a way out, before whatever's going on in the house finds her first. Adam Nevill's No One Gets Out Alive will chill you straight through to the core -- a cold, merciless, fear-inducing nightmare to the last page. A word of caution, don't read this one in the dark"--… (plus d'informations)

I need to reread this, I stopped and started so many times, and read it after a crazy busy month and I think I would have loved it even more if I had read it in one or two days. ( )

I picked this (the audio version) up for two reasons: It’s one of my favourite horror novels (yes, I’ve already read this), and I’ve enjoyed audio books read by this reader. It’s best to think of it as a book of two halves, though both have their share of scares. Many may feel this book goes on too long, and this especially comes across in narration (and in the second half), but I still enjoyed this story immensely. Some skilled editing could shorten this by making some sentences more concise, but I’d struggle to find much, if anything, worthy of deletion. This tale works as a horror on so many levels. As a ghost story, societal commentary, the isolation and fear of a woman alone, and the helplessness anyone would feel trying to make others accept an unbelievable truth. Suspenseful. ( )

Each of these books takes us deeper into the underbelly of magic in London.

I love it! Peter is such a great character to follow through each case. His view on magic, and the case is hilarious. I love his commentary, and the messes he falls into. He is so systematic about learning the magic, and wants to understand how it works from a scientific level which is a great addition to the idea that magic is real. Lesley is seriously my favorite character, her comeback arc is going to be epic, I can just feel it.

This book also features a bit of FBI action which is so funny. The depictions of Americans is hilarious, and accurate.

Already have book 4 downloaded and can't wait to read it.

Notes: HP mentions. ( )

I really liked this book…so why only 3 stars? It was just too long. The story was phenomenal….but just as the tension started rising and the creepy factor intensified, it slowed down. It was kinda like hearing the ding of a microwave and thinking you’re about to eat – only to realize the food's still cold so you have to cook it longer. Don’t get me wrong, I love the build of a story----I just felt like this one took too many side streets. The story was perfect---the journey was just too long. With that said – I’d still recommend it!! ( )

In the end I thought this was better than I first imagined it would be. The female victimization that still doesn't thrill me at least was there for a reason. For me things picked up after 3 years later and I thought the part before this was a tad overlong.

CAUTION SPOILERS AHEAD

There was an odd Amanda Knoxy thing about victims, particularly female victims of abuse and violence, as somehow becoming seen as deserving their fate and actually seen as the evil ones. Stephanie/Amber is tried in the media and demonized, hence her witness protection status. Oh, and of course Fergal is still out there.

Nevill finally gets down to some supernatural suspense and delivers a satisfying ending that somehow ties things up almost too well.

Overlong and somehow managing to be somewhat dull and distasteful at the same time. ( )
