The Chicken Squad is a group of four hilarious chicks who are out to solve crime. When a blue jay, the weird blue chicken, flies in saying his house has been kidnapped, the Chicken Squad embarks on a journey to figure out who took the birdhouse and why. Filled with funny characters and an entertaining plot, this book is a great beginning chapter book for early readers. The illustrations by Kevin Cornell add to the story and Doreen Cronin brings the funny humor and crazy characters also found in her Caldecott Honor Book, "Click Clack Moo: Cows that Type".

The chicks second case involves two clients. As Sugar sees the clues differently, the chicks come though and solve the mystery. This is a fun series that causes me to laugh out loud. I love it and hope more are to come. ( )

Impulse grab at the library. I get the impression the 1st is one I'd love. For example, I love how the majority of the characters happen to be girls, but they have a universal appeal. Very funny, and cute, though a little too superficial to have enduring value, I think. Should esp. be popular with kids who watch too many cartoons and need to be encouraged to read fast-paced silliness. ( )
