Lovely, light little read. Pre-ordered the next book. ( ) Everybody sucks here. This is an awful world, and dragons are disgusting manipulative bastards. There are 2 supposedly good guys, dragon Julius and mage Marci. And yeah, they are better than most, but Julius thinks nothing of manipulating his brother into giving part of his magic to Marci, and that felt distinctly violating. And Marci thanks Julius a lot for saving her life, and apologises a lot for getting him involved in messes, but she still needs her curiosity satisfied in the most inappropriate of times, including when his whole chest is a bloody mess and he begs her to help him revive another dragon, since he is too weak after she sucked all his magic out of him, and he was shot and had to fight a monster. Yeah. That is the right moment to swoon over what dragons look like and whether they have feathers. I did finish it, and it had some good moments. I thought the book was going to redeem itself when Julian started growing a spine, but I think the author forgot what decent people look like after writing practically everyone as absolute trash. All mostly very enjoyable. My only moan is that some passages are a bit tedious: it's like you just really want the pace to keep going but instead it slows right down to tell you what someone is thinking, or some long winded conversation, right in the middle of a load of fast moving chaos that you want to be enjoying in a fast pace way. I admit that i only felt like that a few times, so it's not like the book is like that all the way through, and that's probably why those few passages stand out so much as the rest of it is really on a good pace throughout. So, yeah, that's my only moan. Other than that, i really enjoyed it and i'm looking forward to more, and there's certainly plenty more books in this series. Rachel really has done something wonderful with dragons in this dragon centric story, placing them in a dystopian capitalist environment as totally psychopathic creatures, essentially, the ultimate capitalists. And the dragon clans' internal and external politics that get explored are really good. Basically, everything you wanted to know about dragons but were too afraid to ask. Now doesn't that sound like fun? aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Julius, dragon runt of the litter, is a disappointment to his mother who is the leader of the Heartstriker tribe. So she seals him in his human form and banishes him to the Detroit Free Zone, built on the ruins of Old Detroit, where dragons are killed on sight. With the help of a fellow exile, a mage named Marci, Julius navigates the hostile environment and tries to prove himself worthy of his mother's respect.
