Anne Lamott writes about faith, family, and community in essays that are both wise and irreverent. Itâ??s an approach that has become her trademark. How does she do it? Starting over ten years ago when I was introduced to her writing with [b:Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith|10890|Traveling Mercies Some Thoughts on Faith|Anne Lamott|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1403182174s/10890.jpg|14837] to today -- the warmth, surprise, and honesty continue engaging me.

Familiar essays gathered with fresh material -- her relationship with her now-deceased parents, her experience with Match.com! --Small Victories traces just that: incremental steps of transformation in Anne's life and the lives of people she knows. So much hope.

We don't have to merely grow older, we can all grow softer, gentler, wiser. ( )

I liked some of her stories, but I think she's trying to prove or shock some people by using swear words and bashing the Bush presidents. There were some mentions of the Bible, but no scripture references as I would expect in books in this classification. ( )

Lots of good moments here, and signature Anne Lamott kinds of thoughts and insights, but Small Victories didn't make much of an impression on me overall. It's good, but not great. ( )

This was a book I wanted to savor, to read a chapter a day and reflect on it. Then I read it straight through, not even stopping for pee breaks, food breaks, etc. I didn't realize I needed someone like Lamott in my life until reading this book. I constantly found myself laughing in a way as if she were talking to me and telling me the stories herself. Or how many times her thoughts on religion and God had me agreeing with her, wanting to tell everyone, THIS IS HOW I SEE GOD AND MY RELIGION. SHE SAYS IT BETTER THAN I CAN.

I really cannot say enough how much I truly love this book. Will be buying a hard copy so I can mark it up and read it over and over. Then give it to someone and start the cycle all over again. I will shove this book on you. I will be that person. NO SHAME. ( )

The worst possible thing you can do when you're down in the dumps, tweaking, vaporized with victimized self-righteousness, or bored, is to take a walk with dying friends. They will ruin everything for you.
