In this "sequel" to Gulliver's Travels we meet Lilly, a kidnapped Lilliputian. Gulliver has returned to Lilliput and snatched Lily to take back to London. This is his "proof" that Lilliput exists. He keeps her prisoner in a birdcage in London while he writes his book. He will take her out publicly when he finishes his book. Lily, of course, wants to escape and tries numerous times. The characters in this story, Gulliver, Mr. Plinker, Finn, Chitchat, Swift, Mr. Ovinda, and Horatio all add dimension to the story whether they are helping Lily or hindering her. With her trusty needle she calls "Stabber" she is finally able to escape the attic, but how will she ever get back to Lilliput.

This book is geared to Middle Graders, but younger more competent readers would enjoy it as well. The only downfall would be the somewhat violent death at the end. I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to students who enjoy fantasy, especially after maybe doing a read aloud of Gulliver's Travels.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. ( )

Charming story of a Liliputian, Lily, who is only three inches tall, who has been kidnapped by Gulliver because no-one believes him about the adventures he's had. Lily desperately wants to escape back to her people, every month she's away is like a year to her people. Her next escape attempt will bring her friends and new experiences and hope. Full of fantastic clocks and chocolate.

Entertaining and sweet. ( )

LILLIPUT by Sam Gayton is a sequel to the classic Gulliver’s Travels fantasy adventure.

Young Lily is kidnapped from the beach near her home by a giant named Gulliver. They return to London where Lily is kept prisoner in a birdcage. Gulliver plans to show the world that his adventures were real and that tiny people actual exist. However with the assistance of a friend, Lily escapes and enlists the cooperation of others to help her return to Lilliput.

Written for the middle grades, children will enjoy this fast-paced story. Even those not familiar with Gulliver’s Travels will easily understand the premise. The beautiful pencil illustrations add to the appeal.

Librarians will find lots of fans among children who enjoy “tiny people” stories.

Since he came back to London after his travels, Gulliver only has been ridiculed and laughed at. Nobody believes his stories about small people and talking horses. He needs a proof. That's why Gulliver comes back to Lilliput and kidnaps Lilly, who would be the proof he needs. Now they live in an attic in London while Gulliver writes a book about his travels, and Lilly tries endlessly to escape and come back to Lilliput.

This is the start point for Lilliput, a very well written fantastic story about friendship, perseverance and hope.

The book proved to be a page turner. The tension in the last chapters is amazing. I don't want to spoil the story, so I'm not giving any details here, but everything came perfectly together at the end. It would do a great movie.

I also loved the pictures. Ratteree is such a talented illustrator! They really helped to build the sense of time and space. There are many illustrations in the book, and I wish there were even more!

I'm glad this author entered my radar range.

Age suggestion: 10 to 12 years old. (I've seen it recommended for the 8 to 10 age range, but I would say some parts are kind of "intense", so I decided to pull the range a little up)

I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
