If you want to know anything about the history of London then Jerry White is your man. There are already a wealth of books on London during the Second World War and the blitz but much less about the home front during the First World War so this book is invaluable. What will surprise many is the extent to which London was bombed by the Germans during the first as well as the Second World War from both Zeppelins and bombers. In fact, London's survival during the blitz owed a great deal to the lessons learned in this war. Another surprising effect of the war was the way that labour shortages increased levels of employment and wages for the working classes and so closed the gap between rich and poor. The most affecting sections of the book are the extracts from the diaries of ordinary people. ( ) I've not read any of the author's previous books on the history of London, but on the strength of this book I'm interested. What White gives you is a portrait of a city that could truly claim to be the center of the world, but which was riven by social conflicts that never went away, even with the war. That the author never loses track of how these conflicts of class, gender and power played out is the real strength of his narrative. I will say that I thought that this book was going to be more about the primeval "Blitz" of Zeppelins & Gotha bombers than it was, but that is no detraction from the story that is on offer. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

'Zeppelin Nights is social history at its best... White creates a vivid picture of a city changed forever by war' The Times 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the First World War. In those four decisive years, London was irrevocably changed. Soldiers passed through the capital on their way to the front and wounded men were brought back to be treated in London's hospitals. At night, London plunged into darkness for fear of Zeppelins that raided the city. Meanwhile, women escaped the drudgery of domestic service to work as munitionettes. Full employment put money into the pockets of the poor for the first time. Self-appointed moral guardians seize the chance to clamp down on drink, frivolous entertainment and licentious behaviour. Even against a war-torn landscape, Londoners were determined to get on with their lives, firmly resolved not to let Germans or puritans spoil their enjoyment. Peopled with patriots and pacifists, clergymen and thieves, bluestockings and prostitutes, Jerry White's magnificent panorama reveals a battle-scarred yet dynamic, flourishing city. 'Jerry White's name on a title page is a guarantee of a lively, compassionate book full of striking incidents and memorable images... This is a fast-paced social history that never stumbles... A well-orchestrated polyphony of voices that brings history alive' Guardian Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
