Mama said there'd be days like this, not a whole lifetime. Dena, a stay-at-home mom with mountain lions for neighbors, and best friend Shelby, a bespectacled law librarian living in the Big Apple are Baby Boomers in the throes of midlife meltdowns. Then Giancarlo, the man who has haunted Shelby's dreams for six years, calls. Suddenly, lives of romance and adventure seem possible. Using a little delusion, the ladies become the Divas and set off for the Land of the Boot, Shelby to rekindle her romance and Dena to kindle whatever she can. Come along on the humorous yet bittersweet journey of the Delusional Divas and see how two ordinary women's travels becomes a journey of self-discovery, changing their lives forever....and how just maybe, their experience can change yours too. How? By a time honored Diva Do/Don't: When the reality of life gets you down, DO use delusion to turn it around!… (plus d'informations)
The Delusional Divas, Shelby and Dena, started out their two tours of Italy as rather "determined" Divas. That's where they went wrong.
In this hilarious book of two female friends traveling in Italy in pursuit of men and love, I couldn't help but think back on the days of my own young adulthood. My European travels also included a female blonde friend for this brunette. We both were looking for entertainment throughout our travels so that, if we grew bored with museums and statues, we could always look for cafes and discos to seek male companionship.
What made me laugh the most in this book were: (1) one female friend always threatening to go into the "danger zone", but the other female friend saying not to until the former relents and passes up the opportunity, (2) one female friend always trying to pawn off her male companion's male friend onto to the second female friend, and (3) "danger zones" always having nicknames or code names. As an example of #3 in this book, Dena christened one man Ottavio the Octopus "because he seemed to have more arms than a tree has branches". Do all women do this in their travels? I hope so because it makes traveling more fun.
This book is kind of long, but delightful. If reading it gets tiring, just put it aside for a while, then come back later to read another chapter. It will make you laugh because it all seems so familiar!
The ending is worth it. The Dynamic Duo...er, the Delusional Divas come to their senses and write a book! I'm still waiting for my former travel buddy to start writing! :D ( )

On Delusion:
There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.

"He said right," Shelby answered as she marched on.
One right turned into two...which turned into a third. As Shelby was about to make a fourth right, Dena blocked her way. "How many rights did the man say? You remember four right angles make a rectangle? One more and we'll end up right back where we started!" ... "Dena," she sneered, "they were not right angles. It was one acute angle and two obtuse. Another right would have been a trapezoid, not a rectangle. Therefore, we would not have ended up where we started!"
...usually Shelby vetoed most of Dena's bright ideas. No explanations offered. Simply, nope, I'm not doing that, but you go right ahead if you want.
If a lady gives an admiring Italian man so much as a sideways glance, he'll attach himself to her like a barnacle on a ship.
...because he seemed to have more arms than a tree has branches, Dena christened him Ottavio the Octopus
Once again, Dena was confronted with a choice. Stay and take her chances with a man. Or follow her friend. Shelby was not at all surprised when she heard the pitter patter of strappy sandal-clad feet tipping behind her.
"Oh, you have a friend?" ...And so it came to pass that Shelby found herself being pawned off on Alberto, a twenty-six year old shoemaker, in whom she had absolutely no interest.
