The story moves along at a good pace and alternates Addy's and Wylder's points of view, providing insight into both characters and their reluctant alliance that grows into friendship. My only disappointment was the failure to include the actual Flynn Goster comic at the end of the book. Although this is intended as a middle grade novel, any fan of comics, steampunk adventure, and stories featuring helpful pet rats should enjoy this light read. You can tell that Addy is thinking about the situation more logically than Wylder, and while I think that is a bit of a stereotype, I think that in the book it works well. As for the plot, it is fun, fast-paced, and interesting. There are a lot of really great parts and some lulls, but I think that it was a fun story. I love the idea of being dropped into a comic book, but at the same time, that sounds petrifying... I would recommend for younger readers, with the pictures, maybe even struggling readers - I think they will help; also for comic book lovers. While there are some other children's books in which the characters enter books or the plots of books, I've never before seen one in which the characters enter a comic book. Viminy Crowe's Comic Book feels exciting and new. The bulk of the book reads like a traditional novel, but it's interspersed with comic book pages depicting and continuing the action of the text. (The concept is similar to that of the [b:Travels of Thelonious|1078862|Travels of Thelonious (Fog Mound)|Susan Schade|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348594806s/1078862.jpg|1065586] series by [a:Susan Schade|40042|Susan Schade|https://www.goodreads.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-d9f6a4a5badfda0f69e70cc94d962125.png] and [a:Jon Buller|40041|Jon Buller|https://www.goodreads.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-d9f6a4a5badfda0f69e70cc94d962125.png], but the execution is different.)
The story was fun on its own, but I absolutely loved the comic art by [a:Claudia Davila|428476|Claudia Davila|https://www.goodreads.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-d9f6a4a5badfda0f69e70cc94d962125.png]. She did a great job at depicting the characters and scenarios as described by Marthe Jocelyn & Richard Scrimger; everything looked exactly as I imagined.
It would be difficult to do a sequel to this book -- it would probably feel redundant instead of inventive -- but I would love to be in this world again. Perhaps Jocelyn, Scrimger, & Davila could create the Flynn Goster comics for real. I know I would read them!
I would especially recommend this book for kids who prefer comic books to novels -- what a great transition to the world of novels! -- as well as for anyone who enjoys adventure or dreams of being in the stories they read.
