A very brief engagement of the Lord's prayer. Wright made some excellent observations, but the brevity left me confused at points. ( ) A short (90 pages) but extremely helpful look at the Lord's Prayer, based on a series of sermons from Tom Wright in 1995. Wright journeys through each of the six main phrases in the prayer, looking at them from the point of view of Jesus' proclamation of the Kingdom. Readable (especially for Wright !), insightful, and strongly recommended. A little book, but with great depth. In a series of six sermons that were preached in the run up to Christmas, Tom Wright examines the Lord's prayer phrase by phrase. His writing is accessible but profound, easy to read and difficult to forget. One insight that struck me with great force was the communal nature of the prayer. It is prayed in the first person plural, and therefore has great power as we choose to align ourselves with each other before our Father. I don't just pray for my bread to be provided, but for bread to be provided for us, whoever the us is that I bring to the Father. I don't just pray that for my forgiveness and forgivingness, but for our forgiveness and forgivingness. I am still working the implications of this insight through. I suspect that when I read this book again something else will strike me. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
In this book of pastoral reflections, N.T. Wright explores how the Lord's Prayer sums up what Jesus was all about in his first-century setting. Wright locates the Lord's Prayer, clause by clause, within the historical life and work of Jesus and allows the prayer's devotional application to grow out of its historical context. The result is a fresh understanding of Christian spirituality and the life of prayer. This deeply devotional book will refresh and stimulate the heart and mind of any listener.
