Graduate researcher Luke Royce lives quietly on Tahiti, until he's run off a cliff and left for dead. Circumstances are confusing, and evidence sparse-but a plot becomes clear during an eventful voyage to the Marquesas. Luke must reach his wealthy cousin Brady before more of his family are killed. He will confront a murderer-and accomplices-after a fateful feast on the beach at Hiva Oa. SF Grandmaster Jack Vance spun most of his yarns in realms of far-off time and space, with a style to make unusual settings and events feel familiar and immediate. Bringing his talent to the mystery genre, his novels are sublimely atmospheric, written with firsthand knowledge of period and locale. The Deadly Isles delivers a fast-moving plot, swept with the ambience of picturesque French Polynesia in the 1960s. The Deadly Isles is Volume 24 of the Spatterlight Press Signature Series. Released in the centenary of the author's birth, this handsome new collection is based upon the prestigious Vance Integral Edition. Select volumes enjoy up-to-date maps, and many are graced with freshly-written forewords contributed by a distinguished group of authors. Each book bears a facsimile of the author's signature and a previously-unpublished photograph, chosen from family archives for the period the book was written. These unique features will be appreciated by all, from seasoned Vance collector to new reader sampling the spectrum of this author's influential work for the first time. - John Vance II… (plus d'informations)

During this period of C.Virus lock down, I'm enjoying some fine wine and a Vance early stories reading fest. Having long been a Jack Vance fan since the early '70's, I have always wanted to read everything the great man had written. Many stories, like this one, were no longer in print until Spatterlight Press produced the poor man's version of the Vance Integral Edition.

Whilst not quite what I'm familiar with (the likes of The Last Castle, The Moon Moth and many like them come to mind) these early stories are quite refreshing and an easy read. This story is redolent of JV's experiences of sailing an ocean going yacht and of the French Polynesian islands. His knowledge od the islands and the peoples could well be used in a travelogue.

There is an almost TV series ending to the story, with all the protagonists gathered together in the saloon where, the explanations of all the preceding mysteries are revealed. The scene could be from Agatha Christie's 'Poirot' or the BBC's 'Murder in Paradise'

Entertaining though and got me through one more day of Self Isolation. ( )
