Challenge: New-To-You Author (an author you've never read before) Title: Guys on Top Author: Darien Cox Grade: B+ My M.O. on Amazon to pick out books to read is to look at the suggestions listed below the books I've really enjoyed (A-list books) and sample them for new authors. That's what I did in this case, but I can't remember which of my A-list books prompted this author and title. I've found that I can't read the entire Amazon sample, but try to stop myself somewhere in the middle. If I read the entire sample, I've been known to buy a book that sounds interesting, but don't have time to read, and then read it later. But later I think I've already read the book because the beginning sounds so familiar even though the little Kindle indicator says I haven't finished the book yet. All this brings me around to Guys on Top, a book that I read in one day, staying up at night to finish. Two other things you need to know about me: I've read so many gay romances in the past two years that I often can tell exactly what happens in the book having read the first two chapters. In some ways the romance is gone from the romances I read. The second thing you need to know is that I haven't stayed up in a long, long time to finish reading a book because I'm uneasy about where it could be heading like this one did. Eager to lose his cynicism and heal his battered heart, he immerses himself in the local social scene, which includes a pair of charismatic men engaged in an open relationship. As Doug finds himself becoming emotionally and sexually entangled in their lives, he's forced to reevaluate his views on fidelity, betrayal, love, and the often calamitous price of happiness. This book involves one of our MC's being in an Open Relationship.
A first for me. And while I was kind of taken back, our MC was just so sweet and adorable that I just had to see where this would go. Now granted his "boyfriend" is a crazy asshole...so that helped me be OK with this. I guess OK is the right word? I just wanted our MCs together and ole asshole to GO AWAY!!
The first 70% of this book I really enjoyed...but how this ended up was a little too rosey cheeked for me. I needed a little more angst, a little more drama, a fight...something. Things just fell in place just too easy for me.
So what's next...well the asshole has his own book. Will I read it...but of course. :)
The was a good read and I got to push some personal limits for myself related to an open relationship (which I am more convinced than ever can never truly work) and at what point lines of cheating are crossed. This may not be for everyone but I was intrigued from the start.
BR with Elsbeth (Momo started but this one wasn't for her)
