On the run and hiding from 'the suits,' Carolyn McInally's life is far from straightforward. After her mother and brother go missing in a most extraordinary way (through a hole to another world which appears in the kitchen wall!), she is determined to track them down and bring them home. But life is never that easy! Rescued and protected by a group of unusual and likeminded 'people,' Carolyn hones her magic and fighting skills. Whilst answering a 'call' to retrieve a human from another world she's faced with a quick decision and ends up bringing a demon back with her. Little did she know what effect this demon would have on her. As each day passes her strengths grow and her magic develops to assist her in her quest to track down her family, but there are decisions to make that will affect the rest of her life.

"In this debut YA fantasy, a teen heroine searches for her missing mother and brother while mastering her newfound magical powers. Teenager Carolyn McInally's normal life changed the day that a portal appeared in her kitchen and her mother was pulled through it. Her brother, Eddie, was taken as well, and Carolyn has spent the last two years living alone in her family's beach house in Scotland, gradually recovering from a strange, almost feral emotional state. Now that she's fully aware once more, she's beginning to understand her new life of answering "calls," which involves jumping through gateways into other realms and killing demons. Carolyn learns that she's wanted when government agents investigate her home and that someone named Ethan has an interest in her. Soon after, she's called through a gateway to witness a confrontation between a man and a snakelike demon. The man is Ethan, who works for an organization called the Protectorate; he wants to train Carolyn, a "destroyer," to help keep peace. But instead of killing the demon, Carolyn begins to like him and pulls him back through the gateway. Once on Earth, the demon changes into a handsome youth named Note who insists on serving Carolyn. Ethan tracks Carolyn down, adamant that she start training and join the Protectorate, but she rejects him, opting to search for her family-and bond with the beautiful Note-on her own terms. Author Louise White offers an agile, endearing fantasy that fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will adore. Her description of The Call is perfectly realized: "an irresistible melodic pull, as though it was a choral magnet and she a metal filing." The narrative's strongest suit is its playfully steamy romance between destroyer and demon: "She held his wrists above his head...[and] nipped the tip of his nose with her teeth." The tale's opening, though, feels choppy, with its location only hinted at and Carolyn's many powers appearing with little warning. But once the novel introduces its major characters, the plot lifts off with a succession of nasty revelations. The conclusion will answers some readers' questions as well as give them a strong urge for a sequel. A romping debut that's perfect for teenage fantasy fans" --… (plus d'informations)

Made it half way through the title - the world-building and the characterization are both falling short of engaging my interest. Overall I do think the author is doing a good job, it is just not my type. ( )

Thanks go to Louise G. White for sending me a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Teenager Carolyn is witness to the horrific and bloody taking of her mother into a gateway that appears in their kitchen. Carolyn spends the next couple of years responding to the call of similar gateways, leaping through them in an effort to avenge this event, by killing any demons she finds on the other side.

In a fantasy world where mages and demons are the norm, she encounters Note, a snake-like demon with compelling yellow eyes, and who Carolyn feels drawn to in a way she cannot resist. Unable to kill Note, she pulls him back through a gateway with her, sparing him from certain death at the hands of another. With Note transformed into the most attractive male that Carolyn has ever encountered, the pair form an unlikely bond.

Teaming up with a group of characters they are led to by the enigmatic Ethan, Carolyn and Note discover that they're anchored together, and that not only is Carolyn a much revered type of fighter known as a destroyer, she is also a breeder. Carolyn becomes much sought after by beings that want to claim her and make use of her breeder status.

The fantasy world that exists through the gateways is an exciting deviation from the focus of Carolyn's utter desolation whenever she is parted from Note. At times, I found myself getting a little annoyed at Carolyn's inability to snap out of her teenage angst, but kept reminding myself that she was perfectly entitled to behave like that. Her teenage hormones combined with Note's anchoring to her appear to be a lethal combination as she cannot control her behaviour towards anything that threatens their relationship.

The characters are somewhat endearing, particularly Note. His interactions with protagonist Carolyn are well written and great reading, and I found the premise of this novel exciting enough to hold my interest throughout. As this is the first book in a series, we won't find out what happens with Carolyn, Note and the others until the second book is published this autumn. I know I'll be getting hold of a copy to find out what happens next. ( )

I'm so glad the author offered me a review copy of this book because it would have remained off my radar screen otherwise. The Calling was entertaining, fun, and difficult to set aside; and I look forward to the next book in the series. It let me take a walk down a very personal memory lane, not because its world is anything like mine (fortunately!) but because I would have so enjoyed this book as a teenager. The Calling tapped my inner teen while also appealing to the long-time-adult me.

Author White weaves together the demons, the magic, the powers, and the paranormal romance to construct a convincing fantasy otherworld. However, teen lead Carolyn also has a noteworthy genuineness as well as admirable strength - and the book successfully interweaves teen emotional roller coasters with the fantasy elements, which I bet was hard to pull off.

I hope the next book details more about Carolyn's world, which is kind of like ours yet different in some important essentials. ( )
