I didn't realize at first that this was a new cover for a 10-year-old book... A more discreet cover is nice though! I have read Ilona Andrews' books for years and I consistently enjoy them. I liked this one too, but I'm not sure if I really liked it.

For one thing, I had a hard time taking characters with names like "Nevada" and "Mad Rogan" seriously. (That's very much a me thing though.) More to the point, I couldn't get into the discussion of various types of guns and weaponry. I get that it males sense for the plot, but I zoned out once bullets or caliber were on the page.

Still, I did enjoy the overall plot and I'm intrigued enough to seek out the next book in the series. After all, I've yet to meet a book by Ilona Andrews that I didn't enjoy at least a bit!

There's quite a bit of bodice-ripper feel to this, but somehow, I didn't mind. Well-drawn characters, good plot, very nice pacing.

It's a welcome break from some of the bleh I've read lately. Though, I do wish the author would learn the difference between "to lie" and "to lay." ( )

VERY solid start to a new series. I'm not one for paranormal romance, but this one had enough of the 'para' to more than balance out the romance. The Andrews team really knows their stuff and if this series gives us two books a year from them then I count us twice as lucky.

Recommended to all my GR friends. ( )

Welp! Here I go again - plunging down another Urban Fantasy series! Of course, this a fantastic world to get thrown into. I love the husband/wife team Ilona Andrews. Looking forward to the next book!

ps - the covers for this series are SILLY af. The is some romance included, but not a giant sex-fest. Although . . . I would NOT object to a sex-fest involving Conor Rogan :) ( )

Connor “Mad” Rogan is after the same man as Nevada. He has his own unique powers and decides to kidnap Nevada so she’ll help him. She can tell when people are telling the truth. He can use her in interrogating anyone that may know how to find Adam.
Nevada and Mad Rogan track Adam while playing off each other a bit antagonistically and then more intimately. He’s hot. She skeptical. Now they need to find Adam and stop him before he finds them.

Rogan is an antihero. Dark, underhanded, and determined. Nevada is a straight shooter and protective of her family. These two opposing characters need to meld their skills. It’s amusing and dark at the same time. Her family adds a lot more quirkiness to the mix.

Excerpt of a partial conversation between Nevada and Rogan:
“Did you send an escort with my family?”
“Yes, they’re a target.”
“Thank you.”
“I plan to hold them hostage until you sleep with me.”
I stumbled. He turned and gave me a brilliant, impossibly handsome smile.
“Just kidding.”
Damn it.

This has me laughing out loud! I had to stop reading to make a note of it. He was kidding. Kind of.
A magic world ala Heroes or a Batman quasi world. Fun, dark, and involved with unique abilities. I can’t wait to continue this series. ( )
