For such a tiny story the character development was amazing and there was a level of creepiness that was really quite fantastic.

I just wished for a little more from the ending. A tiny bit more. ( )

I liked the idea for the story but I would have liked it even more if it had been longer. But all and all, quite good for being so short. ( )

Wolverton Station is a very short affair, and a terribly funny one. Werewolves in London? What an idea...

The book is silly, and while it doesn't stand up to [b:20th Century Ghosts|373915|20th Century Ghosts|Joe Hill|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1388224829s/373915.jpg|1049073] in any way, it's still a quite fun affair that captures the feeling of the train ride and culture shock that inspired it.

Wolverton Station es un relato corto de Joe Hill, se publicó por primera vez en el 2011 en una recopilación de historias llamada Subterranean: Tales of Dark Fantasy.

Al ser un relato corto es muy poco lo que puedo decir sobre la trama de Wolverton Station, haré el intento y prometo no revelar nada comprometedor. La historia arranca con un tal Saunders, quien hace un viaje de negocios en un tren de Inglaterra, específicamente desde Londres hasta Liverpool. En las páginas iniciales nos cuentan un poco del trasfondo y el pasado de Saunders, el autor lo hace con la intención de que nos caiga mal… Saunders no es un buen tipo.

Volvemos al presente, el tren se detiene en la Estación Wolverton y la parada dura un poco más de lo usual. El protagonista siente un ligero vaivén en su vagón, como si estuvieran cargando algo pesado al tren. Poco tiempo después, se ponen en marcha. Saunders, que viaja en primera clase, nota que alguien llega a su vagón y se sienta a su lado. Puede que sea un empresario normal, pues lleva chaqueta, maletín y lee un periódico… Pero no, su compañero tiene orejas largas y peludas, una cola inquieta, garras y dientes…

Aquí me detengo, creo que les he dicho suficiente… Si no les llama a la atención lo que ya han leído, dudo mucho que les guste el cuento.

A mi me gustó bastante. Se lee de una sentada, es super corto y preciso, no abunda en detalles ni tecnicismos innecesarios.

Muchos lo comparan con un episodio de The Twilight Zone y tiene un pequeño guiño a la obra de su padre, Stephen King.

Descargarlo en Amazon (para el Kindle) apenas cuesta 1 dólar y fue una excelente lectura por un precio bastante razonable.

Al terminar el relato encontrarán una nota del autor donde dice que el primer borrador lo escribió mientras hacía unos viajes en los trenes de Inglaterra. De ahí surge la idea.

This is a short story, a Kindle Single, and a good way to pass the time. You are feeling frustrated because someone else is late and all of a sudden you have unanticipated time to pass. This story might clam you down, or it might make you afraid to ride commuter trains.

Saunders is succeeding in business because of his marketing strategy of using the resources of a well established business to compete with smaller businesses by selling at a loss for a long period of time until the smaller business owner goes under. We don’t like Saunders. In this short story, I only know him by the one name, Saunders.

Still, who deserves to be on a train with a bunch of carnivores? Saunders makes a few attempts at escape. The omniscient reader suspects that his attempts will be futile, but Hill’s fast paced writing will not allow the reader to escape.

Fleeing is a labor intensive effort. Saunders has to take a break for food sometime. Maybe he should stop at a fast food chain. Or maybe not.

Warning: Reading a Joe Hill book can lead to addiction. I immediately read a second one, “The Heart Shaped Box”, then “NOS4A2”, then I pre ordered “Horns” while reading “20th Century Ghosts.” ( )
