The chick-litt-iest book I've read in a while. Enjoyable enough, for a book about motherhood, not too wholesome and enough cynicism. ( )

2-1/2 stars, really. This is one of those books that made me feel old. The protagonists, Bev and Amy are 30, living in NYC, and avoiding adulthood. Renting lofts and bouncing around temp jobs and various tech pseudo jobs where they get paid to Gchat and tweet, the two women are usually a paycheck away from eviction or couch surfing. Their ambivalence about this and their lack of direction is what makes me feel old. Their friendship is charming, even enviable as they are so sympatico, yet often brutally honest with each other. However, when the friendship is tested by adult circumstances (unplanned pregnancy), then things begin to unravel. A subplot develops with an older, childless woman who is interested in part-time motherhood (whatever that is!) While I generally liked the 2 main characters, I just couldn't relate. ( )

Enjoyable read. Like that it passes the Bechdel Test. Parts of it hit really close to home on an uncomfortable level, me being in somewhat of the same boat as Amy. ( )

This is a very short book and very well written. It makes a great interlude reading experience between longer books, like a tiny delicious morsel. I enjoyed it and would recommend it easily to a friend. ( )

I read about 60 pages of this book before dropping it because it was too "chick stuff" for my tastes. Through this book I've now learnt that there's a genre of chick literature which mostly chicks would like. Wish there was some guy-lit stuff too.

Anyway, the characters are strong, the writing style is smooth, flowing, uninterrupted by needless junk - quite unlike most adult books out there. The characters feel memorable and their accounts are personal.

My only complaint was that there were descriptions of what's going on inside the chick's head and what she's thinking about a guy. That felt weird so I skipped those. I had to drop the book at page 60 because it felt like too much of chick-chick stuff. But that's only a genre complaint. The book's writing style is really good, a no-nonsense writing. I wish there were more authors who wrote this way.

Also, through this book I came to know that it's ducking easy being a female. They have an extreme level of bonding and support. They can express their thoughts freely to each other and solve each other's problems. That's not how it is for guys at all. We have to solve our own problems and be completely independent. If on ocassion we do ask for support from other guys it's very specific and very selectively - things that reallly need help otherwise it would be humiliating.

Wish someone would write in a similar way for us guys too. ( )

Amy once had a “great job” at a site “mocking New York City’s rich, powerful, corrupt, ridiculous elite,” but goes “from being a rising star to being an untouchable in a matter of days.” Amy is vulnerable and amusing at times, but she can also be narcissistic, entitled, self-dramatizing, snide, self-pitying and frequently petty, prideful and envious. She is cast as Lucy, with her best friend, Bev, assigned the less fashionable role of Ethel.

After quitting her latest job (at a small, struggling blog with a “modern Jewish angle,” located “not quite in Manhattan”), Amy finds herself worrying about being unemployed and homeless, though she does ask herself how “a destitute homeless person” could “be in possession of a Comme des Garçons wallet, a pair of Worishofer sandals, a fridge with Moroccan oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes in it”? Bev is worried about becoming a single mother after a disastrous one-night stand leaves her pregnant.

Amy and Bev stand as a cautionary tale for Lena Dunham’s “Girls.” This is what happens when you grow older but not up. In “Friendship,” we are meant to take a journey with these women, but the trip is a really short hop.

Eventually, Amy and Bev become painfully aware of the obvious, that unless you’re born rich, you have to earn your way. As a redemptive arc, it’s not much. Or rather, not enough to invest in a story about two women who really should have known already.
