First collection in one volume.  Seventeen short tales of the Liaden Universe® brought together for the first time. Space opera and romance on a grand scale in a galaxy full of interstellar trading clans. Thirty-three shorter tales of the Liaden Universe® brought together for the first time in two mega-volumes.  Seventeen tales to start with in Volume One! The nationally best-selling Liaden Universe® novels are treasured by space opera aficionados for their wit, world-building, strong characterizations, tender romance, and edge-of-the-chair action. Since 1995, Sharon Lee and Steve Miller also created shorter tales, illuminating additional facets of the Liaden experience. Here is a vast tapestry of tales of the scouts, artists, traders, priestesses, sleight of hand magicians, and pilots who fill the Liaden Universe® with the excitement, action, and romance that readers of the hit series have come to adore.  Celebrating 25 Years of the Liaden Universe® About A Liaden Universe Constellation : Volume 1:  ". . . adds a bit of sparkle to ordinary life. . . . This series [is] . . . the premier place to find good romantic SF adventure. . . . strong characters finding their own way (and, often, each other) in an action-packed galaxy of worlds. . . . Every story stands on its own; readers don't have to be familiar with the Liaden universe. Those who have had the pleasure, though, will find many connections to existing tales." --Analog on A Liaden Universe Constellation: Volume 1.  About the Liaden Universe® series: "Every now and then you come across an author, or in this case, a pair, who write exactly what you want to read, the characters and personalities that make you enjoy meeting them. . . . I rarely rave on and on about stories, but I am devoted to Lee and Miller novels and stories." --Anne McCaffrey "These authors consistently deliver stories with a rich, textured setting, intricate plotting, and vivid, interesting characters from fully-realized cultures, both human and alien, and each book gets better."-Elizabeth Moon "[A] recommended, powerful pick. . .a fast-paced military and political thriller."--Midwest Book Review on Ghost Ship "[D]elightful stories of adventure and romance set in a far future. . .space opera milieu. It's all a rather heady mix of Gordon R. Dickson, the Forsythe Saga, and Victoria Holt, with Lee and Millier's own unique touches making it all sparkle and sizzle. Anyone whose taste runs toward SF in the true romantic tradition can't help but like the Liaden Universe."--Analog "[T]he many fans of the Liad universe will welcome the latest...continuing young pilot Theo Waitley's adventures." - Booklist on Saltation "[A]ficionados of intelligent space opera will be thoroughly entertained. . .[T]he authors' craftsmanship is top-notch." -Publishers Weekly on Lee and Miller's popular Liaden® thriller, I Dare… (plus d'informations)

This is a collection of seventeen stories set in the Liaden Universe. This is the first time that I have listened to the stories. They aren't new to me. I read them first in chapbooks published by the authors and again when they were collected and published by Baen.

There are a wide variety of stories. Quite a few of them are origin stories that provide more depth on the characters who are stars in the main series. We learn how Val Con meets Edger and becomes his brother. We learn how Ren Zel came to be clanless and a pilot on the Dutiful Passage. There are a couple of stories that star Pat Rin and a couple more that tell the backstory of Priscilla Mendoza and how she came to leave Sintia.

There are a few stories that star Moonhawk and Lute and give more of their history. There is a story about Er Thom and Daav when they are first separated sending Daav to the Scouts and Er Thom to his mother to learn to be a trader. Still another story tells what happens when Daav saves the day when Nev'Lorn is attacked by the Department of the Interior.

The stories were all wonderful as stories, but for fans, filling in some of what happened outside of the main stories adds a whole bunch of depth and richness to an already complex and intriguing Liaden Universe. ( )

This is a collection of seventeen stories from the Liaden Universe that were first published in the authors' chapbooks. While they provide new insights for long-time fans of the Liaden Universe series like me, they are also a great introduction to the character-driven science fiction the authors are know for.

There are a couple of stories about Val Con yos'Phelium as he is before we meet him in Agent of Change. One of the stories tells about one his first missions where he meets Edger, the Clutch turtle, and how they came to be brothers. Another tells of a skimmer race on Liad when he and Shan outrage Lady Kareen.

There are stories of Pat Rin yos'Phelium which tell about him balancing for a man who committed suicide, deciding on what he wants to do with his life since he is neither a pilot nor a dramliz. I especially liked the story where he and Nova are sorting some rugs for Luken Bel'Tarda and he learns some interesting things both about Nova and about how Bel'Tarda became part of Korval.

I liked the stories about Moonhawk and Lute even if I can't figure out how, or if, they fit into the Liaden Universe. I also enjoyed the story about Priscilla and why she was exiled from her home planet of Sintia. Another story is also related to Priscilla's as it tells about the events that led to her exile from a different point of view.

All of the stories were engaging and interesting. ( )

This is a larger collection of Liaden Universe shorter fiction. Some of the stories here I've read and reviewed in the earlier chapbooks, but some were new to me. Daav is, as a result of his very courtesy to the young daughter of a clan allied with Korval, is backed into a corner where he can't avoid a duel with that clan's heir. He can't avoid it; he can't kill the other clan's heir. He finds his solution in a very clever choice of weapons.

We also get the story, which I've wondered about, of how Ren Zel came to be expelled from his clan.

Pat Rin has a really unsettling encounter with a rug when he's helping out Luken by cataloging rugs from a house the clan is closing, one scout finds a doomsday weapon, and another is stranded on a world that ought to be interdicted because of its low technology--but he crashed due to a storm in space, and he has to survive. That means going native--and that means forming ties that will be hard to break if rescue ever arrives.

There's more, and it's all good, and interesting, and illuminates more of the Liaden Universe.

Recommended.

I bought this book. ( )

A Liaden Universe Constellation: Volume One by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. This is a compilation of short stories written in the Liaden universe. This universe is mostly high tech with some psionic powers used by some rare individuals/families. The stories are quite interesting and show different aspects to events and individuals who appear in the main books. Some appear to simply be stories set in the same worlds. It isn’t necessary to have read the main books to enjoy these stories. ( )

Stories - neat ones - that fill in some gaps and widen view of Liad. Includes the story of Val Con's first encounter with the Turtle Clan, Moonhawk's (Priscilla) life before her banishment and lots of other goodies. Fun. I've ordered Volume 2! **** ( )
