Now a Netflix film starring Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson, Rosa Salazar and John Malkovich!

Written with the narrative tension of The Road and the exquisite terror of classic Stephen King, Bird Box is a propulsive, edge-of-your-seat horror thriller, set in an apocalyptic near-future world??a masterpiece of suspense from the brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman.

Something is out there . . .

Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.

Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now, that the boy and girl are four, it is time to go. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat??blindfolded??with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children's trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?

Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odyssey??a trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motely group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outside??and confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?

Interweaving past and present, Josh Malerman's breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the f… (plus d'informations)

So so creepy.

This isn’t my typical kind of book and because I read mostly before bed it took me forever to get through it because I didn’t want to read this particular book right before sleeping. ( )

I guess I found it compelling enough to read but really I'm still not sure what all the fuss is about.

Edit: I watched the movie. The movie was so much better honestly wondering why I read this at all. ( )

When I first got this book I was SO excited to read it. I opened it and immediately was put off by the present tense that it's written in. The reviews were good for this book though, so I forged on. After getting used to the style it was a quick read and I must admit I loved it. Initially I thought that the ending could have been better, but the more I thought about it, I realized there's really no other way it could have ended. If you're on the fence about Bird Box, don't be. Just read it. ( )

Although the premise was interesting, this little horror story simply failed to live up to its potential. Neither the writing nor the plot were compelling enough to overcome the annoying present tense stylings and awkward nonlinear jumps through the timeline. In a story where the characters spend most of their time blindfolded, you’d think the author would make a greater effort to bring the other 4 senses to life, but instead we are treated to descriptions along the lines of, “the terrible smell was much stronger”. There were also some plot holes and logic gaps that were obvious enough to pull me right out of the story.

Still it was interesting enough to keep me listening through to the end, so I’ll give it 3 stars.

Audiobook, borrowed from my public library. I was unimpressed with Cassandra Campbell’s narration, and as this is the second book of hers that I’ve listened to without enthusiasm, I think I can attribute it to her and not the material she had to work with.

In Malerman's chilling debut, Bird Box, an apocalyptic reality befalls a Michigan river community—and who knows how much of the rest of civilization—in the form of creatures that cause people who merely look at them to go mad and kill themselves.
Having lost her sister to this horrific fate, a young pregnant woman, Malorie, finds sanctuary with a group of strangers in a small house with covered windows. Malorie and her roommates lives in fear and when they go outside they wear blindfolds to protect themselves. But, what will Malorie do when this sanctuary is no more? How will her and her child survive?
Bird Box is slow build but the climax of the novel is absolutely gloomy, sorta gothic, and horrific in a manner that both reminded me of Stephen King and Alfred Hitchcock.

It's worth reading considering all the buzz about it's adaptation on Netflix. Don't waste your time with that film. It's disappointing. Read this instead and you'll be presently surprised.

I look forward to reading Malerman's follow up, Malorie, later this year.

Malerman overreaches a bit in his debut, which could use as much attention to the cast as to the mood, but the mood is chillingly effective.

Sometimes I wish I were an architect, so that I could dedicate a building to a person; a superstructure that broke the clouds and continued up into the abyss. And if Bird Box were made of bricks instead of letters, I'd host a ceremony, invite every shadowy memory I have, and cut the ribbon with an axe, letting everyone see for the first time that building's name. It'd be called the Debbie. Mom, Bird Box is for you.
