A history of animals used as ways to gain influence and power sounds very intriguing and parts of this book live up to the promise of the cover.

Each section covers someone famous obtaining exotic animals (Lorenzo Medici gets a giraffe while Josephine Bonaparte scored some black swans) and then what they did with said animals (setting them onto gladiators, prisoners and each other in the case of the Romans). "The Medici giraffe" is well written with plenty of moments of interest but it didn't grip me enough to recommend it too highly. ( )

I would recommend The Medici Giraffe not only to animal lovers, but also to readers who enjoy politics, and history buffs, who would like to look at these stories of the past through new eyes. Although the extensive detail Belozerskaya provides can be a little dry at times, if you focus in on, and read just one of the seven sections at a time, you’ll find The Medici Giraffe to be informative and highly entertaining, and the kind of book that stays with you long after you’ve put it down.
