A beautifully illustrated story about a 19th century woman that broke records sailing around Cape Horn. This is a beautiful biographical picture book that tells the story of sailor Eleanor Prentiss and her record-breaking 15,000 journey around Cape Horn in the 1800's. The book is illustrated with beautiful water colors that would appeal to both older and younger readers. It would be nice to use this story to highlight a non-traditional female character, perhaps for International Women's History Month. The nice illustrations would make it accessible to younger readers perhaps to enjoy with an adult, and older readers would enjoy the story as well. It could lead into some nice discussions about traditional navigation techniques, trade routes, colonialism and women breaking the mold. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Ellen Prentiss's papa said she was born with saltwater in her veins, so he gave her sailing lessons and taught her how to navigate. As soon as she met a man who loved sailing like she did, she married him. When her husband was given command of a clipper ship custom-made to travel quickly, she knew that they would need every bit of its speed for their maiden voyage: out of New York City, down around the tip of Cape Horn, and into San Francisco, where the Gold Rush was well under way. In a time when few women even accompanied their husbands onboard, Ellen Prentiss navigated their ship to set the world record for speed along that route.
