The author blends her concerns and research about the draining of the Ogallala road with her own life as the child of a Kansas farmer. It's a good blend of the two as her personal issues with the man she is dating, her son, and her family members kept me reading. The information about the Ogallala was interspersed throughout naturally as she talks about when she interviews this person or researched certain information while she was in the midst of family dinners, harvests, and time with her boyfriend or her family. Her passion for the land is compelling, and her own personal struggles with how she has benefited from the reservoir put a human face on a complicated environmental issue. Out water struggles have been magnified to an even higher level today, and this book is a great way to learn more not only about the aquafer but also about the families whose lives often depend on it. I definitely recommend this to those interested in Kansas, current events, and history. ( ) aucune critique | ajouter une critique

"Julene Bair has inherited part of a farming empire and fallen in love with a rancher from Kansas's beautiful Smoky Valley. She means to create a family, provide her son with the father he longs for, and preserve the Bair farm for the next generation, honoring her own father's wish and commandment, 'Hang on to your land!' But part of her legacy is a share of the ecological harm the Bair Farm has done: each growing season her family--like other irrigators--pumps over two hundred million gallons out of the Ogallala aquifer. The rapidly disappearing aquifer is the sole source of water on the vast western plains, and her family's role in its depletion haunts her. As traditional ways of life collide with industrial realities, Bair must dramatically change course"-- Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
