Suspenseful and cinematic, Bittersweet exposes the gothic underbelly of an American dynasty, and an outsider's hunger to belong. On scholarship at a prestigious East Coast college, ordinary Mabel Dagmar is surprised to befriend her roommate, the beautiful, blue-blooded Genevra Winslow. Ev invites Mabel to spend the summer at Bittersweet, her cottage on the Vermont estate where her family has been holding court for more than a century; it's the kind of place where swimming boldly is required and the children twirl sparklers across the lawn during cocktail hour. Mabel falls in love with the midnight skinny-dips, the wet dog smell lingering in the air, the moneyed laughter carrying across the still lake, and before she knows it, she has everything she's ever wanted: wealth, friendship, a boyfriend, and, most of all, the sense, for the first time in her life, that she belongs. But as Mabel becomes an insider, she makes a terrible discovery, which leads to shocking violence and the revelation of the true source of the Winslows' fortune. Mabel must choose: either expose the ugliness surrounding her and face expulsion from paradise, or keep the family's dark secrets and redefine what is good and what is evil, in the interest of what can be hers.… (plus d'informations)

This book was readable, and I did quite enjoy it - but it was really far fetched and as the book went on it got increasingly ridiculous - and the narrator wasn't very convincing. Mabel, to her surprise, is befriended by her beautiful rich roommate Ev and ends up spending summer with her and her family in a massive estate they seem to own. Mabel gets embroiled in various secrets and finds herself uncovering various unwanted truths about the family, while also hiding one of her own. At the end there are lots of reveals and, flashing forward a few years, Mabel has indeed infiltrated the family. It would have been a bit darker if she had been more manipulative and forced her way in, but it all just kind of happens in quite an unconvincing way. Didn't really live up to its potential - and the addition of the stolen Nazi art took things a bit too far! ( )

Extremely entertaining story. In a way, it reminded me of the tv show Revenge.

It had more darkness than I care for in books (or at all, I guess). That's why I didn't give it 5 stars.

A damaged college student named Mabel gets befriended by her very glamorous and mysterious roommate Ev. Her roommate invites her to come stay with her for the summer and Mabel jumps at the chance. Her own home life is one she's happy to run away from.

When she arrives, she's charmed by the lifestyle that her hosts present. But there are a lot of secrets, Mabel starts to learn this very early on and things only get stranger as she starts to unravel the secrets.

I thought it was well written and very entertaining. The author has a beautiful way of writing.

Ev is the sort of person you would do well to avoid. Rich, spoiled, self-obsessed, she smokes in the dorm even though her roommate can't stand smoke. Mabel is no prize, either, her name is supposed to reflect her status as a 99%er. I recall the name Mabel as a barmaid in an old beer commercial: "Mabel! Black Label!" Yet they find each other and Ev, distressed over a cousin's suicide, invites Mabel to her family's summer home.
Something here is wrong. Very wrong. Mabel's attempts to read Paradise Lost lead her to believe that this place is the Garden of Eden. So it seems. Yet all the doors have strong locks installed on them. What horror is being locked out? Mabel develops an unhealthy obsession with these super-rich people, longing to be an insider, constantly reminded that she is not a member of this family. Is not even rich. Even when Mabel knows that Ev is a chronic liar, even lied to her to do fix-up work on a cottage for free, she cannot rid herself of her obsession.
These people are like Gatsby's Daisy and Tom: they use other people up, wreck them and drop them. Reading their history is like turning up a rock. You don't want to know what's under there. Yet you can't help but wonder, to what depths they will sink.
There are flaws here, and loose ends. The shocking destruction of a turtle colony is a sub-plot left hanging. No force of nature could have done that, but who did it and why are left unresolved.
You will have a hard time putting this book down, the plot is strong and you will need to see just what this family has done to amass such a vast amount of money. You may even want to live in their Garden of Eden. But the price, is your soul. ( )

I chose this book because of it's setting on Lake Champlain, a place my family spent summers when I was young. The premise is not terribly original - socially awkward, poor roommate gets invited to her wealthy roommate's family summer compound. There she finds this golden family is hiding many secrets. The setting and characters are well described, the "secrets" are a bit too much. The final chapters felt rushed.

I liked that the heroine is far from perfect, and that she makes many questionable choices - this is no upstanding moral compass of a character! The reading guide and interviews at the end of the book were very interesting as well! ( )

I would have given this 3.5 stars if I could. I felt to started slow and I did not buy the relationship between Ev and Mabel. It felt forced and unrealistic. Mabel's voice at time is annoying and whiny. However, this is a decent beach read and was a worth the read. ( )
