Edit: I originally rated this as 3.5 stars, but since I read it it has stayed with me and I often find myself thinking of it. I decided to bump it up to four stars! I think a lot of the issue with these short stories that accompany the installments of Chaos Walking is that they're just so short, Ness isn't able to make the characters as multi-dimensional as his others. It definitely still left me wanting more, but the racially charged struggles faced by these star-crossed lovers affected me in some way.

This was a good quickie. I liked the concept of interspecies relationships between the Spackle and the settlers. It just didn't have a huge emotional impact on me. Being so short, the characters remain rather one-dimensional. Still worth reading before moving on to Monsters of Men. ( )
