The day Jonathan "Jack" Young caught that foul ball was the worst day of his life. Instead of seeing his beloved Red Sox hold the lead, he watched in horror as his mistake cost them the first real shot they'd had at the World Series for nearly one hundred years. Jack left Boston in disgrace and moved to Chicago to start over. Instead, he finds Ryan Levine, who shatters the illusion that he could ever escape being the "Bane of Boston." We all make mistakes. Some of them we can learn from and move on, others haunt us the rest of our lives. And in the worst cases, they strangle us to the point of desperation not because the mistake as such was so terrible, but because others won't let us forget. This is the story of one such mistake and Jonathan, the man who had to leave his home town and change his name – and is still haunted by the consequences.

Jack used to be a baseball player, until he made a colossal mistake that lost his team the chance at the World Series. He has been blamed, ridiculed, and even hated by everyone since then; not just the players, but his boyfriend and family as well. Three years later he has moved to a new city, is still alone and believes he has put it all behind him. Starving for love he finds Ryan, and things look up. Until the man reveals he is a reporter…

Ryan has his own set of issues, and initially he believes Jack could help him solve a few. Ryan's father despises him for being gay and even the fact that Ryan loves sports and is a reporter for the Tribune, will not make his father relent. Ryan hopes that writing Jonathan's story, one that has never been published, will help him prove to his father that he is worthy of being respected, if not loved. There is only one problem: once he meets Jack, he is no longer so sure writing the story is the most important thing in his life…

If you like stories with characters who finally find what they have been looking for, if you enjoy a touch of angst on the way, and if you're looking for a sweet read that shows there is hope for everyone, even those who are afraid they'll never be able to put the past behind them, then you will probably like this short story.
