Empath and bookstore owner, Mira Morales, lives on Tango Key (fictional island 12 miles off Key West with hills) with her grandmother, Nadine, daughter Annie, and lover, FBI agent Sheppard. As a category five hurricane threatens the island, Billy Joe Franklin, crashes into the Tango Key jail and rescues his girlfriend Crystal and her buddy, Tia Lopez. They take refuge from the storm in Mira’s house and terrorize the women as Shep is trapped in a cellar with his partner, Gutierrez (Goot); Sheriff Doug Emison and FBI chief Leo Dillard – both of whom are implicated in the million-dollar robbery pulled-off by Franklin and in the jail-break. Hurricane Danielle destroys much of Tango Key – lots of references back to Hurricane Andrew, which Tia barely survived – stories of thousands of dead hauled away in refrigerated Burger King trucks.
