nessreader: Oliphant's carlingford chronicles are an equivalent series to the barchester books; victorian sagas of social manouevering and parish politics. If you enjoy barsetshire, they are well worth trying. Perpetual is about high anglicanism vs lower church and like trollope spreads sympathy across opposed characters.… (plus d'informations)
A delightful and funny novel which made me wonder how much one can put Trollope's social observations into a current state of affairs if it comes to schemes to gain power and influence. I love his insight into the human psyche, both of men and women. Parts reminded me of Woody Allen and how he depicts speechlessness and confusion in otherwise very articulate persons and how one’s own perception so much differs from that of others.
Reading in an illustrated, carefully edited small full cloth book with gilded edges and ribbon page marker was an extra delight. ( )
This is a more ambitious novel than The Warden, where that book's strengths are amplified in the genuinely enjoyable characterisation and narrative, but also the digressions abound and the set pieces expand to fill space seemingly not editorially constrained. Enjoyable overall however ( )
Ultimately a Victorian story of who will marry whom, but the opening 20% or so of the novel, in which the characters are named and outlined and the stage is set, is hilarious. Certainly, if you were interested, you could learn a lot about the ranked clerical positions of the Anglican church here, and many great words are used, e.g. congé, toxophilites, ha-ha, and, my favorite, hebdomadal. Barchester Towers is hilarious, a couple of the numerous witty quotes from this novel. Drop a star for being a bit long-winded. Trollope is becoming a favorite.... ( )

Paru en 1857, Les Tours de Barchester est le plus populaire des romans de Trollope, il appartient au cycle des Chroniques de Barchester, qui décrit la vie d'un comté anglais vers 1850. Pour résumer brièvement un livre fertiel en intrigues et rebondissements, qu'il s'agit de la lutte qui oppose l'épouse du nouvel évêque, l'énergique Mrs Proudie, à son chapelain, le cauteleux Mr Slope – chacun essayant d'imposer son candidat au poste de directeur de l'hospice de Hiram. Tempête dans une tasse de thé ? Non point, car l'Eglise anglicane occupe une place prépondérantedans la vie de l'Anglais victorien, et ses conflits, dont les implications sont autant économiques que politiques, se répercutent du haut en bas de l'échelle sociale. Ce qui distingue Trollope des deux autres grands romanciers victoriens, Dickens et Thackeray, c'est qu'il décrit son époque avec une richesse de détails qui fait de toute son oeuvre une inépuisable source de renseignements pour historiens et sociologues. Mais bien sûr, Trollope n'a pas voulu que décrire. Armé d'une ironie qui n'a pas d'équivalent à son époque, d'une érudition qui lui permet métaphores et sous-entendus d'un comique frisant parfois le vaudeville, il brocarde sans ménagement la corruption, l'hypocrisie et le conservatisme qui minent alors l'Eglise d'Angleterre – et toute la société anglaise, refermée comme une huître après les élans (et les excès ?) de la période romantique
