I remember reading this book as a child. I was amazed by the illustrations and all the different animals, especially the color. I love how different authors collaborated on this book explaining what they love about their favorite animal. My favorite animal always was a dog. I did love bunnies because they were cute. I use to like lizards because I drew them all the time in my class and they are interesting. I believe young children would enjoy this book because I know most children love animals. This book, in my opinion, was okay. I wanted to know more about their favorite animal in the book. Certain animals like the leopard, giraffe, dog, and elephant. ( )

This book is a wonderful compilation of artwork depicting the favorite animals of famous children’s authors and illustrators. Of course it’s no surprise that Nick Bruel’s favorite is the infamous Bad Kitty; but wait a minute, oh no, I think it really is octopuses; sorry Bad Kitty. Beautiful artwork by well-known children’s illustrators including Lucy Cousins, Susan Jeffers, Jon Klassen, Mo Willems, Chris Raschka and of course Eric Carle make this book a beautiful feast for the eyes. Not to be missed.

I like this book for several reasons. It is not a traditional storybook with a beginning, middle, and end, but it contains smaller stories and poems written by different authors. This is a great book for children who cannot concentrate for long periods of time and need practice building their reading "stamina". Children often see long stories and begin to feel discouraged, which leads to a lack of comprehension. The individual stories do not require a long attention span to comprehend, so children will feel less intimidated when starting them. On the other hand, there are times where the writing seems very disorganized and can be overwhelming for a child. On the page titled "Behold The Octopus", a cat interferes with the description of an octopus and wants to tell its own story. One section states, "The female octopus can lay as many as 150,000...HEY!". The sentence is left incomplete because the cat jumped in and said "HEY!". While an adult could follow along and understand that the next word was supposed to be "eggs", this can be difficult for a small child to understand. Sometimes, the organization of paragraphs is better for children than text broken up and all over the page. The big idea of this story was the everyone has a favorite animal for many unique reasons. This encourages children to think about their own favorite animal and reflect on why it is their favorite. The language in this book is clear and the illustrations represent the text well. This book would work well in a classroom because it could lead to many different activities for a wide span of ages. These activities could include having students create their own page for the book or having children draw their favorite animal and share the drawings with the class. ( )
