They are England's most eligible bachelors, with the most scandalous reputations. But for the right woman, even an unrepentant rogue may mend his ways . . . Lady Grace Mabry's ample inheritance has made it impossible for her to tell whether a suitor is in love with her- or enamored of her riches. Who better to distinguish beau from blackguard than her notorious childhood friend, the Duke of Lovingdon? With no interest in marriage, Lovingdon has long lived only for pleasure. He sees little harm in helping Grace find a proper match. He simply has to teach the lovely innocent all the ploys a scoundrel uses to gain a woman's favor- by demonstrating his wicked ways. But as lessons lead to torrid passion and Grace becomes ensnared in another man's marriage plot, Lovingdon must wage a desperate gamble: Open his heart fully-or risk losing the woman he adores . . .… (plus d'informations)

When the Duke Was Wicked
4 Stars

Series note: This is the first book in the Scoundrels of St. James spin-off series. The focus is on the children of the couples from the original series.

This installment pairs Henry Lovingdon (stepson to Jack Dodger, book #2) and Grace Mabry (daughter of Frannie Darling, book #3). Following the deaths of his wife and daughter, Lovingdon has given up on society, family and love. In an attempt to coax him out of his despair, Grace uses all of her wits and knowledge of the ways of scoundrels. Now if she can only stop herself from falling in love with him.

Lorraine Heath is a wonderful storyteller and this book is one of the best exemplars. Not only are Lovingdon and Grace very appealing as individuals and as a couple, but Heath skillfully weaves some deeper topics into the storyline.

That being said, there one issue that prevents this from being a 5 star read and that is the fact that the hero is still in love with his first wife. While Heath manages to establish the romance between Lovingdon and Mabry in a convincing manner, the specter of his first family still lurks in the background.

All in all, a delightful romance and I look forward to continuing on with the second generation of scoundrels. ( )

The Duke of Lovedon (who suspiciously never has a first name revealed) lost his wife and daughter to typhus. He falls into a destructive life-style. Grace asks for his help with weeding out fortune hunters. He reluctantly complies while he sends her mixed signals because he's falling for her himself but refuses to acknowledge it. Grace believes she needs to find a genuine love match in order for her husband to be able to look past her scars. These scars are from a partial mastectomy. She's abducted by one fortune hunter named Vexley. Lovedon goes after her and is shot in the rescue attempt. He survives and when he comes to, he realizes he doesn't want to live without Grace no matter how long he might have with her. ( )

Not quite a four, but it had a great epilogue, so I rounded up! ( )

I loved Ms. Heath’s Scoundrels series and upon hearing that she was writing this series which involved the children of the heroes and heroines, there was no doubt in my mind that I’d have to read it.

In this first book we get Grace who has loved Lovingdon for a very long time. After all, they grew up together. They knew each other very well. They were friends. Her heart was broken when he married a woman he loved.

As for Lovingdon, you’ll get a full impact of his story right off the bat in the Prologue, and it will break your heart.

Seriously, this is one of those books that everything that you desire in a romance, it’s offered in it.

Highly recommend not just this story, but this author as well. He can write plot and character so well that you’ll forget yourself in her stories.

In loving memory of our sweet Duchess, who became a member of our family after surviving Katrina. She never met a stranger, never had a harsh bark for anyone, and taught us that dogs do indeed smile.
