Sarah Monette and Elizabeth Bear return with the third book in their Iskryne trilogy, An Apprentice to Elves. The trilogy began with A Companion to Wolves, and continued in The Tempering of Men. This novel picks up the story of Alfgyfa, a young woman who has been raised in the Wolfhall by her father Isolfr, who is the human leader of the queen-wolf Viridechtis' pack, and was the protagonist of the first book. The warrior culture of Iskryne forbids many things to women--and most especially it forbids them bonding to one of the giant telepathic trellwolves. But as her father was no ordinary boy, Alfgyfa is no ordinary girl. Her father has long planned to send his daughter to Tin, a matriarch among the elves who live nearby, to be both apprentice and ambassador, and now she is of age to go.… (plus d'informations)

Well, that trilogy got better as it progressed. ( )

I enjoyed this, but not as much as the first two.

The first half is great, Alfgyfa is living with the svartalfar, and it is all very Clan of the Cave Bear, too tall, too blonde, too impulsive and wanting to question things. But the second half, although it has some very awesome ideas (the Wild Wolves chosing to come and follow Alfgyfa! The army walking across the frozen sea! The heroic sacrifice of the Bear-serkers!) gets very bogged down in the war against the Rheans. And war is Not Fun.

I feel like there is a lot of unfinished business (will Alfgyfa ever become a mastersmith? How will her relationships with her svartalfar lover and the wild wolves develop? Will the svartalfar and the aettrynalfar ever re-establish trade and relationships? Will Alfgyfa make Ultimate Weapons by working runes of power into her metalwork?) so maybe this is not the end of a trilogy? And it has left me wanting more. ( )

A good transition to a new generation, it succumbed to last minute climax syndrome, but that’s a requirement of adventure fiction. I liked Algyfa, though I did miss wolf politics which I prefer to Alf politics. ( )

Third book in their psychic wolves series. Alfgyfa is the titular apprentice, learning smithing until various crises brings her home where the Roman-like Rheans are threatening to destroy her human family. The psychic wolves play a role, as do elf politics. It’s fun worldbuilding, though the ending has a bit of an anticlimax to it. Hard to figure out how it could’ve gone well without the anticlimax given how they set the invading Rheans up as incredibly well-resourced, but still. ( )
