On the last pages of the book the reader can find the basics of how to play the ukulele. A book that can be used during music time, and to help educate about working together with one another.

A great story about self discovery and standing up for what you believe in. I would recommend this book to student's who are beginning to transition into chapter book reading. It's characters are quirky and fun, and send out a great message on creating friendships and the importance of music. ( )

Hayley is a shy little third grader who finds a ukulele at a yard sale for $4. Her music teacher shows her how to play, and she enters the school talent show and is a hit. she inspires other students to play, and even recruits as many as 35 to join her group, the BUGs. They encounter a minor hiccup when the school board decides to cut the music program and fire the teacher to save money. However, Hayley organizes a rally and the entire town shows support, causing the board to reconsider its decision. Finally, a donation to the group contingent on keeping the music program saves the program and the teacher. This story is an inspirational lesson in the power of music and perseverance, and how even a little kid can make a huge difference.

Summary: Hayley is the shortest 3rd grader in her class and hates it. This early chapter book tells the story of tenacious Hayley and her Ukulele. Hayley finds a ukulele at a garage sale and with the help of her music teacher learns to play. Soon other students want to learn and a new club is formed. Just as the group is really getting going, the school board decides to cut the music program to save money. Hayley and her friends have to find a way to save their music and their teacher!

Reflection: Nice early chapter book about finding your talent and fighting for what you believe in. Includes themes of friendship, cooperation, and fitting in. ( )

What a delightful book that would be a launching pad for so many lessons, including community building, accepting those who are different from ourselves, learning compassion, and most importantly finding your own voice. Hayley buys a ukulele at a garage sale, and soon works up the courage to ask her music teacher for assistance with some basic chords. Before too long Hayley is learning to sing simple songs, and soon she finds the courage to start her own school band. As her singing and strumming grow stronger, so, too, does her drive and conviction, as she learns to speak up for herself and for what she truly believes in. What a delightful read!
