About my rating; it's supposed to be 1.5 stars.

Ok, first of all, my little kiddies, comets do not burn in space. This might come as a shock to you, but fire needs air. There's no air in space. Also, comets are made of ice.

The first chapter is great, it builds up to a great character (Clarke), but then you turn the page (or press a button or swipe the screen) and there's a new character. A boy, so you know there's going to be romance. The will-they-or-won't-they kind of romance. He's going to "die" because he's madly in love with Clarke (yes, Clarke is a girl). His name is Well Jaha (by the way, "jaha" means oh really in norwegian). By the time we meet this kid, he's already responsible for two deaths and burning down a tree in a spaceship.
Then there's Glass, whose entire purpose in the story is to be the knocked up teenager who's kissing her boyfriend and going shopping with her friends.
And at last there's Bellamay (or something like that) who's sneaks onboard the shuttle to protect his illegal sister.

Let me just say that the first chapter is the peak of the book, there's no more peaks after this.

If this was written by Michael Grant (by Gone and BZRK fame) the entirety of this book would cover the first 2 chapters. That's how much story it actually contains. It is clear that the first chapter was not written by Kass Morgan, as there's no intellect behind the rest of the book. All the information the reader is given to paint a picture, is given in the first chapter. The rest are just ink-waste between kissing sessions.

And what fucked up cult does the author belong to, where they name girls Clarke and boys Bellamay? And Glass? Come on.

Don't read this book. And if you must, don't pay for it. Use a library. Don't award publishers and authors for this kind of travesty. ( )

Usually if I don't finish a book I don't post a review, however in this case I read more than I normally did. I tried, I really did try, but I just could not get into it. Reading over half of the book and I just did not like the characters, nothing really happened at all and ultimately I just started not to care. This book put me in a huge reading slump too! I didn't want to start another book on the off chance that I will finish this one, but I decided to just drop it off at the library ad pick up one other.

One of the reasons I think I couldn't get into this book is because most of the stories are told in flashbacks, while I was more interested in the present, ultimately I just started skimming the flashbacks. Plus, a took such a long time for anything to truly happen, I literally yawned with how boring it all was. The characters were just not my cup of tea and while I did like Clarke sometimes, having one okay character is not a book saver. Half the time I got a headache over how frustrating everything made me.

Since this was made into a series on the CW, it must have been a popular book, people must have liked it and I think that's why I kept reading because I thought maybe I'm missing something. Alas, I don't think I did, I was really excited to read this but maybe I just overhyped the book. If you read the book and did like it let me know why, I am interested to see your point of view. ( )

I love me my dystopias, but this was super heavy on the romance. Like... 90% of characters' decisions were based on romantic feelings, and they're all teenagers, and I want to see them in 20 years looking back and shaking their heads at themselves. ( )

UPDATE 22/02/2021 - content warnings added

CW: attempted sexual assault, quite a bit of violence, and heavy issues such as medical experiments on kids, drug addiction, suicide and euthanasia.

Well I enjoyed the TV series more.

There is a whole story arc in the book that they never pursued in the TV series. For good reason. It was way too yearny and quite frankly boring. I just didn't care about Glass (really?) and the sad sap she was crushing on. I was literally willing the ship to plummet to the woefully described world beneath. I say world but really I mean island. That's right. The 100 landed on an episode of Love Island. If you enjoy books about teens tent hopping on school camp then you will enjoy this. ( )

It’s okay, pretty disappointing compared to the show (definitely watch it) it’s fairly slow and a lot of the characters are missing/different, this is one of the rare cases where the show is a lot better and more detailed than the books! Still a good read and I enjoyed them (finished all 4 books in 2 days and the last is the best!) it’s easy reading and a nice style of writing and a happy ending. I wish there were more books ( )
