"The foolish King Ethelred has fled, and Askeladd's band is one of hundreds plundering the English countryside. Yet victory brings no peace to the elderly Danish King Sweyn, who worries that his untested, sensitive son Canute will never be ready to take the throne. The king's attempt to force his son to become a man places the young prince within the grasp of the gleeful killer Thorkell! Whoever holds Canute holds the key to the thrones of England and Denmark--and Askeladd has his own reasons for joining the fray!"--Amazon.com.… (plus d'informations)

Another brilliant volume of Vinland Saga. It's still the best manga of a brutal and bloody but emotionally genuine and expertly executed story of war and brotherhood I've read in recent years, centered in a time period and culture that rarely if ever gets a manga treatment like this one. Yukimura has the art, the storyboarding, the characters, and the pacing that all together makes Vinland Saga a must read series. I am loving how the various characters are developing and who they are becoming through all of this warfare and treachery. A as always. ( )

The final part of the throwback history of Thorfinn. Entertainingg, as always.

Everything I said in my review of vol 1 also stands for vol 2. ( )

So good. I'm really thrilled that I'm finally reading this series. Historical drama with violence and entrancing characters with stunningly detailed art. Read it. ( )

A fictional tale set in the 11th century, a time when Vikings ruled northern Europe. The adventures of Thorfinn continue as he and Askeladd's band are pulled into the Nordic war with England (a war that was never given a name). We add new and colorful characters like the giant Thorkell and a bit of royalty with the addition of Prince Canute.

How will the protagonists handle living in a land that
a) speaks a different language.
b) has a different religion.
c) wants nothing to do with them.

Cultures clash and so do swords in this volume. Action, mysteries, life, death, and...love?

This omnibus contains volumes 3-4. ( )

Askeladd's band, with Thorfinn's help, is plundering the English countryside, but run into trouble when they encounter the mighty Thorkell, so when Danish King Sweyn's inexperienced son Canute gets into trouble, Askeladd's band goes after the prince instead to gain favor/leverage with the king. In the extra materials, the author displays how much research he has done into the time of the Vikings, but (as in the first installment of the series) very little is actually displayed in the pages of the manga - these are more martial artist than Vikings. The story, however, is quite interesting, the art beautiful, and the characters are very engaging - Thorfinn is still very young and obsessed with his plans for vengeance and Prince Canute is a great foil in that he is equally young, but so very, very sensitive and oddly innocent (which is why he is drawn like a girl, I assume - it's an irritating choice of the artist that female=weak, but perhaps it's a cultural thing). Looking forward to follow along in the adventures of these characters. ( )
