Plot Summary: Jimmy and his mom were crossing a street in Australia when she got hit by a car. Thankfully, a workman saw the new orphan lying on the side of the road and brought him to the Koala Hospital. Once he was examined by a doctor, he went home with Barb. As he grew, he was checked on frequently. Finally, he was introduced to another koala bear who taught him to climb. He learned to eat eucalyptus leaves and be more independent. He didn't get hugs or much human contact anymore. He was ready to go back to the forest. Barb watched him climb up a tree and said goodbye.

Jimmy the Joey tells the story of a baby koala that was rescued after his mother was hit and killed by a car. The story explains how his keepers took care of him and helped him get the skills needed to return the wild once he grew up. The age level for this book is K-3rd grade, but I would put the interest level being closer to third grade than Kindergarten. This would be an excellent choice for an animal report or for a lesson on how people impact animals. There is a section in the book with a map of Australia. It shows where Australia is in the world, and where Jimmy was found in Australia. The page also has useful facts about Koalas, such as what they eat, where they live, and that they are marsupials.

Jimmy is a baby koala whose mother dies after being hit by a car. The koala ambulance takes Jimmy to the Koala Hospital where he is cared for by biologists and volunteers until he is old enough and strong enough to go back to his natural habitat. There is a very brief description of the accident that killed Jimmy’s mother. It may be scary or upsetting for some young or sensitive readers.

Because this is a true story with superb photographs, young readers will be drawn to Jimmy and learn a lot about koalas in the process. Notes from the photographer (and coauthor) are at the back of the book. These give a little background to the story and express the photographer’s passion for telling this story in words and pictures. Text length varies to tell the story but not overpower the page (or young readers). The page design is phenomenal, using an Aboriginal design and colors from eucalyptus tree bark.

This joey is so adorable you may want to buy a stuffed one for kids to hold as you read the story.

There is a subtle environmental message about koala habitats. The last page has resources for koala information and some creative ways to get involved, including adopting a koala online from the Koala Hospital featured in the story.

This is a highly recommended addition to school, public, or home library.
