The text and the illustrations in this book tell a similar story, and the illustrations focus on the most important text on each page. While the illustrations are detailed watercolor paintings that complement the text, they do not add much more detail to the story than what is already written in the text. The illustrations do create the thrill and danger of the country, as well as a sense of movement and urgency through the hero's ride and the army's river crossing.
The book is clearly written with simple enough text for upper elementary students to comprehend while reading. The opening two words of the text, “Paul Revere” are written in a larger, different font than the rest of the book. This acts as a visual clue to the reader, that Paul Revere is an important person in the story. The illustrations tell a consistent and logical story and are of a similar size on most of the pages. The illustrations in this book helps the story to come to life. This is a good book to use in history classes when talking about the British war and talking about the war's important people such as Paul Revere. This can lead to a variety of activities. ( )

"Paul Revere's Midnight Ride" by Stephen Kerensky is a detailed story about a Paul Revere's famous story of warning colonies that the British were on their way to conquer Concord. This book would be great to read before an American history lesson on Paul Revere. The story gives the reader a better understanding of the true historical story because it gives information about Paul's personal life and the risk he took by warning others of the British. Although Paul took such a dangerous risk of going out to warn the American colonies of the British's arrival, his risk is what prepared the colonies to fight off the British and claim Concord and Lexington. Paul Revere's Midnight Ride tells the story about Paul Revere's ride to warn his people that the British were coming. On his way back, Paul Revere was captured, but the British were attacked by the Rebels leading Paul Revere to get back home safely. I enjoyed this book and gained a lot of new information I didn't know before, but I did think it had too many words for a picture book. I think young readers might have a hard time following along with there being too many words. I think the illustrations were beautiful and helped me follow along and made the story become more realistic. ( )
