Let's be honest, when I began reading this book and found out that a bunch of trickster gods had settled in Washington, DC, I laughed like hell. Because of course they did. Because of course the tricksters are the only gods willing to put up with humans and their politics. This book had a lot of things I like: secret societies, strong friendships, close female friends, and parents who are actually there for their children. I also liked the main character who was a teenaged girl in the way I remember being one--testing her boundaries and her identity. As you read and follow her story you can see her trying to figure things out and trying to be the best person she can be as the situation changes. Something I very much liked about this book was that the gods, for all their power, took a backseat to the humans. It isn't the gods' story and they don't get to be at the center of it. It would have been all too easy to let that happen--and to come up with magical fixes for things--but at the end it's Kyra who has to make the hard decision and act. (Provided by publisher) I thought this book was pretty good, it had some interesting characters and a decent story line, but some more action would be nice. It seemed to me like the "climax" of the book was only half a climax. It's going to be a series (I think), so maybe the second book will have some knock down, drag out fights in it or something. ~~~~~~~~4.5~~~~~~~~ I won a signed copy of this book from a GoodReads contest so I only thought it fair to give an honest review in return. Having read many of the reviews prior to reading the book I was going into this reading not expecting much. I quickly found that it was not deep or poetic like Laini Taylor or Cassandra Clare but it was very well written, straight and to the point. The few parts with differing POVs were smooth and easily discernible. It has all of the components I like: Gods of all types, ethnicities, and character who we're not center stage and their god-like attributes were not overused to move the plot along adnausium. There is a Secret society with some pretty cool toys and operatives. I also really liked the fact that the plot was not predictable and the pace was fast. So all in all a really easy, fun, and most importantly enjoyable read. I wish we could use half stars because this is a 4.5 in my book but I'll be generous and give it a 5 because it really surprised me (in a good way) ~~~~~~~~4.5~~~~~~~~ I won a signed copy of this book from a GoodReads contest so I only thought it fair to give an honest review in return. Five years ago, the gods of ancient mythology awoke around the world. This morning, Kyra Locke is late for school.Seventeen-year-old Kyra lives in a transformed Washington, D.C., home to the embassies of divine pantheons and the mysterious Society of the Sun. But when rebellious Kyra encounters two trickster gods on her way back from school, one offering a threat and the other a warning, it turns out her life isn't what it seems. She escapes with the aid of Osborne 'Oz' Spencer, an intriguing Society field operative, only to discover that her scholar father has disappeared with a dangerous relic. The Society needs it, and they don't care that she knows nothing about her father's secrets. Now Kyra must depend on her wits and the suspect help of scary gods, her estranged oracle mother, and, of course, Oz-whose first allegiance is to the Society. She has no choice if she's going to recover the missing relic and save her father. And if she doesn't? Well, that may just mean the end of the world as she knows it. From the author of Blackwood comes a fresh, thrilling urban fantasy that will appeal to fans of Neil Gaiman, Cassandra Clare, and Rick Riordan. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |

I've heard that this book is for fans of Percy Jackson, but I honestly didn't get that vibe off of it. I loved the world building here, and the characters were well written, but I could have used more back story.
All in all, though, this story has more going for it than against it, and I ended up enjoying it very much.
4/5 stars. ( )
